MediaTek introduces Dimensity 8400 chip for midrange phones

MediaTek launches the Dimensity 8400 chip, bringing flagship-level features like advanced AI, better graphics, and 5G to midrange phones.

MediaTek is targeting midrange smartphones with the launch of its new Dimensity 8400 system-on-chip (SoC). Designed to bring flagship-level features to more affordable devices, the SoC offers improved performance, efficiency, and advanced capabilities.

A leap in performance and efficiency

The Dimensity 8400 features MediaTek’s “All Big Core” design, an eight-core ARM Cortex-A725 processor clocked at up to 3.25GHz. MediaTek claims this chip delivers a 41% increase in multi-core performance compared to its predecessor, the Dimensity 8300. It also uses 44% less peak power, making it significantly more energy-efficient.

Graphics performance also sees a notable boost, thanks to the Arm Mali-G720 GPU. This GPU offers 24% higher peak performance and 42% better power efficiency, ensuring smoother gaming and visual experiences.

Packed with AI and imaging advancements

For artificial intelligence applications, the Dimensity 8400 includes MediaTek’s NPU 880. This processor supports significant language and small language models, making it ideal for modern AI-driven tasks. The Dimensity Agentic AI engine (DAE) is also integrated, enabling developers to create apps anticipating user needs and adjusting to preferences seamlessly.

The Imagiq 1080 Image Signal Processor (ISP) will benefit photography and videography enthusiasts. This advanced ISP enhances focus speed, captures more light, and produces high-resolution images, even in challenging conditions. The chip also supports WQHD+ displays with refresh rates up to 144Hz, delivering ultra-smooth visuals.

Ready for the future of connectivity

MediaTek has equipped the Dimensity 8400 with a powerful 5G-A modem, offering support for 3CC carrier aggregation and download speeds of up to 5.17Gbps. This ensures faster, more reliable connectivity for users in areas with 5G networks.

According to MediaTek, the first smartphones powered by the Dimensity 8400 are expected to hit the market by the end of the year. These devices promise to offer users flagship-like experiences without the hefty price tag.
