Meta partners with Midjourney to bring AI-generated images to its platforms

Meta partners with Midjourney to bring advanced AI-generated images to its platforms, boosting creative features across its apps.

Meta has announced a new partnership with AI image generation company Midjourney, aiming to integrate its technology into Meta’s products and services. The collaboration was announced by Meta’s newly appointed Chief AI Officer, Alexandr Wang, on 22 August. He described the agreement as a “technical collaboration between our research teams,” indicating that the partnership goes beyond simply licensing Midjourney’s existing tools.

While Wang did not disclose the specific terms of the deal, Meta spokesperson Ashley Gabriel declined to provide further details, referring only to Wang’s announcement. Midjourney has yet to issue a formal comment.

Expanding Meta’s AI ambitions

The deal comes as Meta intensifies its investment in artificial intelligence, particularly in its pursuit of what CEO Mark Zuckerberg has called “AI superintelligence.” In recent months, the company has made major moves to compete with industry leaders such as OpenAI and Google. One of the most notable developments was Meta’s acquisition of a 49% stake in Scale AI, the company co-founded by Wang, for US$14.3 billion — a move that also brought Wang into the company.

Meta has increasingly sought to enhance its AI capabilities across its platforms, introducing features that allow users to create AI-generated content within its apps. The Meta AI app already centres on a feed of AI-created images and videos. Facebook users can generate AI images when composing posts, while WhatsApp and Instagram offer similar options within chat features.

By incorporating Midjourney’s expertise, Meta hopes to advance the quality and appeal of AI-generated media across its platforms.

Midjourney’s role in AI image creation

Midjourney is widely recognised for its AI-driven image and video generation tools, which have grown popular among creators for their technical quality and aesthetic appeal. The company’s involvement is expected to play a significant role in shaping Meta’s upcoming AI-driven features, including improvements to image and video generation within the Meta AI app and other services.

“We are incredibly impressed by Midjourney,” Wang said. “They have accomplished true feats of technical and aesthetic excellence, and we are thrilled to be working more closely with them.” He added that further details of the partnership will be shared soon.

Despite the collaboration, Midjourney will continue to operate independently. Its founder and CEO, David Holz, emphasised that the company remains “an independent, community-backed research lab” with “no investors,” suggesting that the partnership will not alter its business structure.

Looking ahead

The collaboration marks a significant step in Meta’s efforts to position itself as a leader in AI innovation, particularly in the field of image generation. With platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp already experimenting with AI tools, the integration of Midjourney’s technology is likely to enhance user experiences by making AI-generated content more visually appealing and widely accessible.

Meta’s decision to partner with a well-established AI research lab underscores its commitment to pushing AI forward in both functionality and design, signalling a stronger focus on the role of creativity in artificial intelligence.
