Netflix begins testing OpenAI-powered search feature

Netflix is testing an AI search tool for iPhones in Australia and New Zealand that helps users find shows using detailed, mood-based prompts.

Netflix has started testing a new search tool powered by OpenAI, designed to help you discover shows and films more easily. This new feature allows you to use detailed, specific language—even based on your mood—to find something to watch. It’s currently being tested on iOS devices in Australia and New Zealand, with plans to expand the trial to the United States in the coming weeks.

The search upgrade shifts away from the usual browsing by genre or actor. Instead, it lets you type in more natural and personal phrases, such as “a feel-good film with a twist” or “something to watch when you need motivation.” It’s an opt-in feature, meaning only those who use it will have access during the testing phase.

Netflix confirmed the accuracy of the trial and explained that it’s still in its early stages. The company uses this time to gather feedback and better understand how people interact with the new tool.

MoMo Zhou, a spokesperson for Netflix, said the following about the trial:

“It’s early days for the feature, and we’re in a learn-and-listen phase for this beta.”

The OpenAI-powered search aims to make your browsing experience faster and more personalised. You no longer need to know exact titles or stick to basic categories. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the number of choices or unsure what to watch, this feature could help match content to your feelings or preferences.

This kind of smart search uses artificial intelligence to understand more complex questions. It can respond to prompts like “something funny but not too silly” or “a drama with a strong female lead.” It gives you more control over what you watch and how you find it.

While this test is currently limited to iOS, it shows Netflix’s continued efforts to improve how people explore its huge library. The company has not yet shared whether the feature will come to Android or smart TVs.

Building on Netflix’s use of AI

For over two decades, Netflix has been using artificial intelligence behind the scenes to suggest shows and films based on your viewing habits. This new feature brings AI to the front of the experience, giving you a direct way to interact with it.

In a recent interview, Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters explained how important AI has been to the platform’s growth. He said the company has always paid close attention to new technologies and looks for ways to use them to support both creators and viewers.

He said Netflix’s role is to be proactive in exploring innovations. The goal is to improve storytelling for creators and deliver better viewing experiences for members.

The test of this AI-powered search is part of that broader vision. If you often struggle with decision fatigue when choosing what to watch, this feature may offer a simpler, more intuitive solution.

As testing continues, Netflix will be watching closely to see how people use the tool and what feedback they provide. For now, it’s a small experiment, but it could signal a big change in how you use Netflix in the future.
