OpenAI says it now earns US$10 billion a year in revenue

OpenAI says its yearly revenue is now US$10B, doubling last year’s total, and its AI tools are used by over 500 million users and 3 million businesses.

OpenAI has announced that it has reached a major financial milestone — the company now earns US$10 billion yearly in recurring revenue. This is almost double what it brought last year, around US$5.5 billion.

You may know OpenAI as the creator of ChatGPT, the AI chatbot that has become popular worldwide. According to a spokesperson from OpenAI, this new revenue figure includes income from various services. These include its consumer-facing apps, business products linked to ChatGPT, and its API (application programming interface), allowing developers to use OpenAI’s tools in their apps and software.

A growing number of users and business clients

Over 500 million people actively use OpenAI’s products every week, and more than 3 million businesses now pay to use its tools. These numbers have skyrocketed since ChatGPT was launched just over two years ago.

If you’ve ever chatted with ChatGPT or used apps powered by OpenAI’s technology, you’re part of this growing user base. OpenAI’s tools offer businesses a way to improve customer service, write documents, analyse data, or build new AI-powered features.

The company’s rapid growth in users and paying customers has greatly boosted its yearly income.

Aiming high for the future

OpenAI isn’t stopping at US$10 billion. It has set a bold target of reaching US$125 billion in revenue by the year 2029, which is more than twelve times its current earnings.

To reach that goal, the company continues expanding its services and investing in new technology. As the company pushes the limits of AI, you can expect to see more advanced versions of ChatGPT and other tools.

However, hitting that goal will require ongoing growth and continued interest from individuals and businesses.

High costs and big ambitions

Despite its high revenue, OpenAI still faces financial challenges. Running a company focused on artificial intelligence is expensive. OpenAI spends billions of dollars annually to attract and pay top talent, but it also needs powerful computer systems and energy resources to train and operate its AI models.

While the company hasn’t shared its operating costs or whether it’s profitable yet, experts believe it will need to keep increasing its income to cover these growing expenses.

So far, OpenAI has remained quiet about when — or if — it expects to make a profit. For now, its focus seems to be on growth and innovation.

In just a short time, OpenAI has become one of the biggest names in the tech world. If it keeps growing at this pace, you’ll likely see even more AI tools powered by the company’s technology in your daily life.
