Google adds AI-powered narrated slideshows to NotebookLM

Google updates NotebookLM with Video Overviews, enabling AI-generated narrated slideshows using user documents and visual elements.

Google has expanded the capabilities of its AI-driven research assistant, NotebookLM, with the introduction of a new feature called Video Overviews. This enhancement enables users to generate narrated slideshow presentations directly from their documents, offering a more visual way to digest complex information.

The feature is currently being rolled out in English, with support for additional languages planned in the near future, according to a recent company blog post.

AI-generated presentations to simplify information

The new Video Overviews function serves as a visual counterpart to the existing Audio Overviews. With this update, an AI-generated host not only narrates the content but also introduces new visuals to accompany the narration. These presentations feature a combination of images, diagrams, quotes, and numerical data extracted directly from the user’s uploaded documents.

“You can think of these as a visual alternative to Audio Overviews: the AI host creates new visuals to help illustrate points while also pulling in images, diagrams, quotes and numbers from your documents,” Google explained. The tech giant believes that this combination makes the tool especially effective for explaining data, demonstrating processes and making abstract ideas more concrete and understandable.

A demonstration video released by Google showcases playback controls designed to enhance the viewing experience. These include the ability to skip forward or backwards in 10-second intervals and to adjust the playback speed, features aimed at improving navigation and user control.

Studio tab receives functionality and design updates

In addition to the slideshow feature, Google is introducing several enhancements to the Studio tab within NotebookLM. This section of the platform enables users to create a variety of AI-assisted content, including Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, study guides, and briefing documents.

One of the key changes is the introduction of new functionality that allows users to “create and store multiple studio outputs of the same type in a single notebook.” In practical terms, this means a user could create several Audio Overviews, all drawing from the same source material, without the need to duplicate or reorganise content across different notebooks.

To complement the functional upgrade, the Studio tab is also receiving a visual redesign. Google revealed that the new layout will feature four prominent tiles at the top of the interface, offering quick access to Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, Mind Maps and Reports. This refreshed interface aims to streamline workflow and improve ease of use.

These updates are expected to roll out to all users over the next few weeks, enhancing how users interact with and present their information within the NotebookLM platform.

Expansion hints at future format developments

Google has indicated that this is just the beginning of more format options for NotebookLM. While the new narrated slideshow feature is the latest addition, the company hinted at the development of “additional formats” in the future. Though details were not disclosed, the direction suggests ongoing investment in multimedia tools powered by artificial intelligence.

The continued development of NotebookLM highlights Google’s commitment to reshaping how people conduct research, organise content and present ideas, all within a single AI-supported ecosystem.
