Apple brings new health features to older Watch models

Apple adds hypertension notifications and Sleep Score to older Watch models with watchOS 26, expanding health tools beyond its newest devices.

Apple has announced two new health-focused features for its smartwatches: hypertension notifications and Sleep Score. These functions will debut on the new Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Series 11, but they will not be limited to the latest models. Owners of older devices will also gain access through the upcoming watchOS 26 update.

Hypertension notifications expanding to more devices

According to Apple, hypertension notifications will be supported on the Apple Watch Series 9 and later, as well as the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and newer. This feature is designed to help users monitor elevated blood pressure levels and receive alerts when irregular patterns are detected.

The watchOS 26 update is scheduled for release on 15 September 2025. However, hypertension notifications are not expected to be available immediately when the update launches. Apple explained that the rollout is subject to clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other health regulators worldwide.

Once approved, Apple plans to make hypertension notifications available in more than 150 countries and regions later in September. The feature aims to provide users with early awareness of potential hypertension risks, allowing them to seek medical advice if necessary.

Sleep Score to reach older Apple Watch models

The new Sleep Score feature will be available on an even broader range of Apple Watch devices compared with hypertension notifications. This function gives users a detailed score based on sleep duration and quality, helping them better understand their nightly rest and overall health.

Apple confirmed that Sleep Score will be supported on all Apple Watches compatible with watchOS 26. This includes the Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), Series 6 through Series 10, as well as the Apple Watch Ultra and Ultra 2. By making this feature widely available, Apple is ensuring that even users with older devices can benefit from more advanced sleep insights without needing to upgrade to the latest model.

A broader focus on health tracking

With these updates, Apple is expanding its focus on health and well-being. The company has steadily introduced new monitoring tools on its wearables, including heart rate alerts, blood oxygen tracking and electrocardiogram functions. By bringing hypertension notifications and Sleep Score to a wider group of users, Apple is reinforcing its position as a leader in wearable health technology.

While the timing of hypertension notifications depends on regulatory approval, the Sleep Score feature will be available to a large number of Apple Watch owners immediately with the release of watchOS 26. Both features reflect Apple’s ongoing effort to support preventative health care through accessible technology.
