Pixel Buds Pro 2 receive adaptive audio and gesture controls in latest update

Google’s latest update adds adaptive audio, gesture controls, and more to the Pixel Buds Pro 2, enhancing sound quality and hands-free usability.

Google has begun rolling out a major update for its Pixel Buds Pro 2, bringing new features that enhance sound quality, usability, and overall convenience. The improvements were first previewed during the Made by Google event in August and are now gradually being rolled out to users worldwide.

Smarter sound with adaptive audio

One of the headline features arriving with this update is Adaptive Audio, which is now available in the Active Noise Control section of the Pixel Buds app. This function automatically adjusts sound levels depending on the listener’s environment, providing a smoother balance between music, podcasts, and outside noise.

For moments when the world gets unexpectedly loud, Google has added Loud Noise Protection. This feature detects sudden, harsh sounds such as ambulance sirens or nearby construction and reduces their impact on the listener. Both tools are designed to make listening more comfortable and seamless, bringing the Pixel Buds Pro 2 closer in line with premium rivals like Apple’s AirPods Pro 3.

Improved AI assistant performance

The update also brings changes for those who use Gemini Live, Google’s AI assistant. Thanks to advanced audio processing, the earbuds can now prioritise the user’s voice while filtering out background sounds. This improvement means commands and dictation are easier to understand, even in noisy environments such as busy streets or public transport.

Google is also moving further towards hands-free control. With the latest software, Pixel Buds Pro 2 owners can nod their head to answer a call or start dictating a text message. A shake of the head will reject an incoming call or dismiss a text reply. These subtle gesture controls aim to make the earbuds more intuitive and practical, particularly when users are on the move or unable to touch their device.

Update availability and installation

The rollout is part of Google’s 4.467 software release for the Pixel Buds Pro 2. According to the company, the update takes approximately 10 minutes to download, followed by an additional 10 minutes to complete the installation. As with many of Google’s updates, distribution is gradual, so not all users will receive it immediately.

The enhancements add new functionality to the Pixel Buds Pro 2, helping to justify their Pro status. With features that automatically adapt to surroundings, protect hearing, and enable simple head gestures, the earbuds now offer a more refined listening experience at a competitive price point.
