PlayStation Portal now supports cloud streaming for more gaming flexibility

PlayStation Portal gets cloud streaming support for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers, offering more playability and enhanced audio features.

Sony has introduced a game-changing update to its PlayStation Portal handheld. Initially designed to stream games from your PlayStation 5 via Wi-Fi, the Portal now allows you to stream select titles directly from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalogue, thanks to a new system update rolled out last week.

What’s new with the PlayStation Portal?

The key highlight of this update is the addition of cloud streaming, a feature currently in beta and available exclusively to PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers. This means you can now enjoy gaming on the Portal without needing to power on your PS5, adding a new layer of convenience to the handheld experience.

According to PlayStation’s official blog, a stable internet connection is essential to get the most out of this feature. Streaming games in 720p require a minimum speed of 7Mbps, while 1080p gaming demands at least 13Mbps. However, some features remain unavailable at the moment. For example, Game Trials, voice chat, and in-game purchases are not yet supported. Additionally, PS4 and PS3 titles cannot be streamed through the Portal.

Audio improvements and enhanced usability

The update also brings some notable audio enhancements. These include a lower minimum volume setting and the ability to adjust PlayStation Link device settings directly from the Portal. These tweaks aim to make the gaming experience smoother and more customisable for users.

The new update fundamentally elevates the PlayStation Portal’s capabilities, making it a more versatile device. With the added support for cloud streaming, you gain access to a wider range of games and more freedom to enjoy them on the go.

Current limitations and availability

It’s important to note that PlayStation’s cloud streaming service is unavailable in Asia, except for Japan. However, determined gamers in restricted regions can explore workarounds, such as creating a US account with a PlayStation Plus subscription, to unlock access to the feature.

As Sony continues to improve the PlayStation Portal, this update highlights its commitment to offering gamers more flexibility and value. Whether you are a casual player or a dedicated enthusiast, these new features might enhance your gaming experience.
