PlayStation unveils stunning retro-style PS5 and PS5 Pro for 30th anniversary

PlayStation celebrates its 30th anniversary with retro-style PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles. Preorders start on September 26, and limited stock is available.

As the original PlayStation, or PS1, approaches its 30th anniversary, Sony is celebrating this milestone by unveiling two special edition consoles – the PS5 and the forthcoming PS5 Pro. These consoles feature a nostalgic redesign, bringing back the iconic grey colour of the original PS1, along with the classic PlayStation logo. This release will undoubtedly stir up fond memories for long-time gamers, making it difficult to resist picking one up. Sony pulled off a similar tribute in 2014, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the PlayStation line with a special edition PS4.

Thoughtful design with a nostalgic touch

Sony hasn’t simply thrown together a quick redesign for this 30th anniversary celebration. A real effort has gone into capturing the essence of the original PlayStation while keeping it relevant to today’s tech-savvy gamers. The updated DualSense controller, while not a direct copy of the PS1 controller, fits well with the overall retro aesthetic. In a nod to the past, Sony has included retro-style cable connector housing, PlayStation-shaped cable ties, and even a themed vertical stand to enhance the nostalgia.

The packaging is also designed to evoke memories, with a box that looks like it could have come straight from a 1990s toy store. These little details really highlight the thought and care put into this release.

Two unique bundles to choose from

If you’re considering getting your hands on one of these special consoles, you have two options. The PS5 bundle has a digital console version – meaning no disc drive – and a standard DualSense controller. Along with the console and controller, you’ll also receive some fun extras like a PlayStation-themed poster, a sticker, and even a quirky addition: a PlayStation paperclip.

For those looking to go further, the PS5 Pro bundle has even more to offer. This bundle includes everything in the standard PS5 package but has a standard controller and the premium DualSense Edge controller. Plus, you’ll get a retro-styled cover for the optional disc drive and a charging stand. While the PS5 Pro might look nearly identical to the regular PS5, the retro design helps it stand out as something truly special.

Even the PlayStation Portal, a handheld gaming device, is getting the retro treatment with a themed refresh featuring that signature grey colour. And if you don’t want to buy a full console but still want to get in on the retro vibe, Sony offers redesigned controllers that can be purchased separately.

Limited stock; early preorders advised

Preorders for the 30th-anniversary PS5 and PS5 Pro will begin on September 26, and they will be available through various retailers and Sony’s own channels. The official release date for these special consoles is November 21, just a few weeks after the PS5 Pro’s regular launch.

However, you may want to act quickly if you’re eyeing the PS5 Pro. Sony only produces 12,300 units of the retro-styled PS5 Pro, making it a highly sought-after collector’s item. Unfortunately, pricing details haven’t been revealed yet, but the PS5 Pro bundle is expected to come with a hefty price tag. Given its limited availability and nostalgia, it’s likely worth every penny for devoted fans.
