Qi2 25W wireless charging unveiled, support confirmed for iPhone and Android devices

WPC announces Qi2 25W wireless charging, offering 70% more power and support for Apple iPhones and major Android smartphones.

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has officially introduced Qi2 25W, a significantly faster version of its existing wireless charging standard. Promising a notable performance boost, the new standard is expected to bring wider compatibility to both Apple and major Android smartphones in the near future.

A major upgrade in wireless charging

Qi2 25W, previously referred to as Qi v2.2.1, delivers nearly 70 percent more power than the original Qi2 specification. This upgrade aims to enhance wireless charging speed and efficiency for everyday users.

The WPC confirmed that this release will be the first time both Apple’s iPhone and major Android brands formally join the Qi2 ecosystem. According to the consortium, the new standard is set to transform wireless charging adoption by providing a unified and reliable platform for all major smartphone manufacturers.

Qi2 technology was first announced in November 2023 to simplify the wireless charging experience by establishing a global standard for wireless charging. Built on Apple’s MagSafe system, the technology enhances magnetic alignment and energy transfer, resulting in more consistent and efficient charging performance.

Widespread adoption expected

Although Qi2 initially experienced slow uptake following its 2023 debut, the WPC believes Qi2 25W will serve as a catalyst for widespread adoption. The organisation described the growing momentum around the new version as “incredible,” noting strong early interest from manufacturers.

During a limited launch held last week, 14 devices successfully passed Qi2 25W certification testing. These included both transmitters and receivers, suggesting readiness across a variety of product categories, from smartphones to chargers.

WPC also disclosed that several hundred devices are currently queued for full-scale certification testing under the new standard. This, the organisation said, represents an unprecedented level of interest in the Qi2 platform.

Compatibility and future rollout

To date, Qi2 wireless charging is supported by Apple’s iPhone 12 through iPhone 16 series, as well as the HMD Skyline smartphone. The WPC has not yet released a definitive list of Android models that will be compatible with Qi2 25W, but it indicated that “major Android smartphones” are preparing to support the standard.

By incorporating Apple’s MagSafe technology into its core design, Qi2 offers improved energy efficiency and faster charging times compared to earlier wireless charging methods. It also enables better alignment between devices and chargers, reducing heat loss and improving user convenience.

With the updated Qi2 25W standard now officially launched and dozens of products undergoing certification, industry analysts expect a wave of Qi2-enabled devices to enter the market later this year.
