Qualcomm challenges Apple with the new Snapdragon X Plus chip

Qualcomm challenges Apple with its new Snapdragon X Plus chip, promising enhanced performance and competitive pricing in the laptop market.

Qualcomm has unveiled its latest move in the laptop CPU battle just after Intel’s Lunar Lake reveal at IFA 2024. The Snapdragon X Plus, a variant of its existing chip lineup, is designed to undercut Apple’s dominance in the market.

Enhanced Performance and Efficiency

The new Snapdragon X Plus features an 8-core configuration, leveraging a 4nm process that promises up to 3.4GHz clock speeds, with single-core boosts reaching 4GHz. Notably, it includes a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) capable of 45 Tera Operations Per Second (TOPS). This design optimises battery life, a hallmark of Qualcomm-powered laptops like the Dell XPS 13 9345.

Competitive Pricing Strategy

Qualcomm emphasises that the Snapdragon X Plus enables laptops in the US$700 to US$900 range, though specific models like the Asus Vivobook S 15 and ProArt PZ13 start at US$899 and US$1,099, respectively. This pricing strategy undercuts Apple’s MacBook Air, which starts at US$1,000 with the older M2 chip, potentially broadening Qualcomm’s appeal in the mainstream market.

Availability and Market Impact

Qualcomm’s new chip will be integrated into Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung laptops, with select models already available. This strategic move positions Qualcomm to compete directly with Apple’s offerings, leveraging performance metrics and competitive pricing to capture market share.
