The Neo Geo Advanced Entertainment System first appeared in the 1990s as a premium home console, widely admired but also known for its high price. While many players at the time could not afford it, the new release aims to attract retro gaming enthusiasts who now have greater spending power and nostalgia for classic titles.
Modern upgrades bring the classic console into the present
The Neo Geo AES+ has been designed to closely match the original hardware while introducing modern features that make it easier to use with today’s displays. One of the most significant updates is the addition of HDMI output, enabling the console to support resolutions up to 1080p. This change enables players to connect the system directly to modern televisions without the need for additional converters.
Along with HDMI connectivity, the console includes DIP switches on its underside. These switches allow users to adjust settings such as language preferences, display modes and performance options, including overclocking. The feature offers greater flexibility for players who want to customise their gaming experience while maintaining the authenticity of the original system.
The updated model also introduces a permanent method for saving high scores through a memory card, addressing a limitation that affected earlier versions of the console. In addition, a low-power usage mode has been added to improve energy efficiency during operation. Despite these updates, the console retains its original AV output, ensuring compatibility with traditional CRT displays for enthusiasts who prefer the look and feel of vintage screens.
Multiple editions and bundled accessories announced
Pre-orders for the Neo Geo AES+ are now open, with two versions available at launch. The first is a special all-white 35th anniversary edition, priced at US$349.99. This bundle includes an arcade stick controller, a limited-edition Metal Slug cartridge and a memory card, offering a more comprehensive package for collectors and long-time fans.
A second, standard version will be released in the console’s classic black finish. This edition is priced at US$249.99 and includes an arcade stick controller but does not feature the additional commemorative items found in the anniversary bundle. Both versions aim to preserve the look and feel of the original Neo Geo hardware while offering modern usability improvements.
Alongside the console launch, Plaion Replai plans to introduce a selection of newly updated game cartridges. A total of 10 titles will be released, featuring well-known classics such as Metal Slug and The King of Fighters 2002. Each cartridge is expected to retail at US$89.99, providing players with physical versions of popular titles adapted for use with the new hardware.
The availability of modernised cartridges highlights the companies’ intention to support the console beyond its initial release. By offering familiar games in updated formats, SNK and Plaion Replai aim to attract both returning players and newcomers seeking to explore classic arcade-style gameplay.
Pricing reflects the heritage of premium retro hardware
Although the price of the Neo Geo AES+ may appear high compared with many modern gaming devices, the cost reflects the system’s heritage as a premium product. When the original Neo Geo AES launched in the 1990s, it cost US$649.99, making it among the most expensive home gaming consoles of its era.
The Neo Geo brand has long been associated with high-quality arcade experiences brought into the home. By maintaining compatibility with original game cartridges, the new console allows collectors to use existing libraries without modification. This backward compatibility is expected to appeal strongly to enthusiasts who have retained their original collections over the years.
The announcement also highlights the growing demand for retro gaming hardware that combines nostalgia with modern convenience. Recent years have seen renewed interest in classic consoles, with several companies producing updated versions that balance historical accuracy with improved connectivity and reliability.
Shipping for the Neo Geo AES+ is scheduled to begin on 12 November. With pre-orders already underway, SNK and Plaion Replai appear confident that interest in retro gaming remains strong, particularly among players eager to relive the distinctive arcade experiences that defined earlier generations of gaming.
