The new iPad Mini 7 brings Apple Intelligence to a small package

Discover the iPad mini 7 with an A17 Pro chip and double the storage, available from October 23, starting at US$499.

Apple has officially announced the release of its seventh-generation iPad mini, launching over three years after the previous model. While the iPad mini 7 looks similar to its predecessor, it boasts significant upgrades under the hood, including the new A17 Pro chip and enhanced Apple Intelligence features.

Here’s what you need to know about the latest addition to Apple’s iPad mini lineup.

The powerful new A17 Pro chip boosts performance

The iPad mini 7 may have kept its familiar 8.3-inch display, but the real changes are in its performance. It comes with the A17 Pro chip, the same processor found in the iPhone 15 Pro series. This upgrade promises faster speeds and improved efficiency, making multitasking and running apps a smoother experience. The A17 Pro chip also powers new Apple Intelligence features like an enhanced Siri, Writing Tools, Image Playground, and the fun Genmoji feature.

The performance boost is not the only internal upgrade. The new iPad mini comes with 128GB of storage in the base model—double what was offered in the 2021 version. For users who need more space, Apple is offering a 512GB option for the first time, catering to those who use their devices for work or creative projects.

It has the same display and better functionality

Although the new iPad Mini 7 brings impressive internal upgrades, its display remains the same as the previous generation. The 8.3-inch screen has a 2266 x 1488-pixel resolution and a pixel density of 326 ppi. The display delivers sharp, clear visuals, but the 60Hz refresh rate is unchanged, which might disappoint users hoping for a faster, more fluid screen experience.

Nothing has changed in dimensions—the iPad mini 7 still maintains its compact size, which is ideal for those looking for portability. However, one thing that stands out is that the front-facing camera is still in portrait mode, which might feel more natural for users holding the device vertically. The front and rear cameras remain the same as those in the 2021 model, making this upgrade less about photography and more about performance.

Apple Pencil Pro support and new features

The iPad mini 7 now supports the Apple Pencil Pro, providing more precise input and creative control for artists, designers, and note-takers. With this upgrade, the iPad mini is positioned as a versatile tool for work, creativity, and entertainment. It’s especially helpful for those who enjoy sketching or taking detailed notes.

With Apple Intelligence now part of the iPad mini experience, users can expect more advanced features, such as smarter Siri commands and enhanced writing tools that simplify content creation. Apple has also introduced the Genmoji feature, a fun way to customise emojis using face tracking.

The seventh-generation iPad mini will be available from October 23, starting at US$499 for the 128GB model. This compact tablet offers plenty of power, storage, and new capabilities for anyone who values portability without sacrificing performance.
