Xreal launches lightweight a01+ AR glasses for US$299
Xreal launches its lightweight a01+ AR glasses with a 120Hz Micro-OLED display and built-in audio for US$299.
Xreal has released its new a01+ augmented reality glasses, offering a lightweight, more affordable option for users who want a portable screen for films, streaming, and gaming.

The glasses are the first product from X by Xreal, a budget-focused sub-brand that the smart glasses company announced several months ago. The new range is designed to make wearable display technology more accessible to mainstream consumers without including some of the advanced features found in premium smart glasses.
Priced at US$299, the a01+ focuses mainly on entertainment and media consumption. Xreal describes the device as a “pocket cinema” aimed at commuters, frequent travellers and other users who want access to a large virtual display while away from home.
Lightweight design focuses on portable entertainment
The a01+ weighs 62 grams, making it portable and one of its main selling points. Xreal achieved a lighter design in part by omitting a built-in camera, which also helps keep the focus on viewing content rather than on capturing images or providing advanced mixed-reality features.
The lack of a camera means the glasses are primarily intended to work as a wearable display. Users can connect the device to compatible equipment and view films, television programmes, online videos or games through a large virtual screen. This approach may appeal to people who want a private entertainment experience while travelling or using public transport.
Xreal says the glasses can create a virtual display “equivalent to 147 inches at 4 metres”. The large projected image is designed to provide a cinema-style viewing experience without requiring a television, monitor or projector.
The glasses offer a 50-degree field of view, allowing the virtual display to occupy a substantial part of the user’s vision. Their slim design also gives them a more conventional appearance than some larger premium smart glasses currently on the market.
Xreal has added interchangeable front frames to give users more control over the device’s appearance. Owners can change the front section to match their preferred style and create custom accessories with a 3D printer.
Micro-OLED displays support HDR10 and 120Hz gaming
The a01+ uses dual-layer Micro-OLED displays and supports HDR10 content. The screens can reach a peak brightness of 1,600 nits, intended to deliver clear images with improved contrast and greater detail.
The glasses also include technology that upscales standard dynamic range content. This feature is designed to improve the appearance of older videos and other media that do not support high dynamic range.
A refresh rate of up to 120Hz is included to provide smoother motion during games and fast-moving video. The higher refresh rate may be particularly useful for portable gaming, where fast motion and responsive visuals can enhance the viewing experience.
Xreal has also introduced a proprietary spatial stabilisation system. The technology is designed to keep the virtual image steady when the wearer moves or when the surrounding environment experiences sudden movement. This could help maintain a clearer and more comfortable picture during travel.
Users can choose between three display profiles. Cinema mode is intended for watching films and other video content, while Eye Care mode is designed to provide a more comfortable viewing experience. Standard mode offers a balanced setting for general use.
The combination of a large virtual display, a 120Hz refresh rate and spatial stabilisation places the a01+ between basic wearable displays and more expensive augmented reality products. However, its entertainment-focused design means it lacks the camera-based functions found on some premium smart glasses.
Four audio modes offer different listening experiences
The a01+ includes built-in 9 x 20mm audio drivers, allowing users to listen without connecting separate headphones. The sound system offers four modes designed for different types of content and listening environments.
The 3D Surround setting provides 360-degree spatial audio intended to create a more immersive experience. Cinema mode places greater emphasis on dialogue, which may make speech easier to hear while watching films and television programmes.
Whisper mode is designed for use in shared spaces, including aircraft and public transport. It reduces sound leakage, making it less likely that nearby passengers will hear the audio. Standard mode provides a balanced equaliser setting that Xreal says is suitable for music and streaming content.
Although the a01+ lacks the broader smart features found in some camera-equipped glasses, its lower price and lightweight design may make it an accessible option for users primarily interested in entertainment. The device prioritises display quality, portability, and built-in sound over photography or advanced augmented reality features.
The Xreal a01+ AR glasses are available to buy now for US$299. Their release expands the company’s product range with a lower-cost model aimed at consumers seeking a portable, cinema-style display for everyday travel and entertainment.
