Apple celebrates Global Running Day with exclusive Apple Watch award — here’s how to get it

Celebrate Global Running Day by completing a 5K run with your Apple Watch to earn a special one-day-only award.

Global Running Day is a special occasion that runners worldwide mark with one simple act: going for a run. If you own an Apple Watch, Apple has given you a little extra motivation to lace up your trainers and hit the road.

To celebrate Global Running Day 2025, Apple is offering a limited-edition activity award. But here’s the catch — it’s only available today, and you’ll need to complete a specific challenge to unlock it.

How to earn your Global Running Day award

To claim this year’s special Apple Watch award, all you need to do is complete a run of at least 3.1 miles (or 5 kilometres). Make sure you record your workout using your Apple Watch. That’s it.

Once you’ve finished your run and the activity is logged, the award will automatically appear in the Fitness app on your iPhone. This year’s design features a colourful track circling the year 2025. It’s a fresh take on last year’s badge, updated with new colours and a new date, but the idea remains the same—a fun, digital reward for your efforts.

The great news is that you’re not limited to Apple’s built-in Workout app. You can use any Apple Watch-compatible running app that syncs with the Health app. Whether you use Strava, Nike Run Club, or something more advanced like WorkOutDoors, it counts as long as your activity is recorded as a run.

If you’re looking for more control over your stats and visuals during your run, WorkOutDoors is a favourite among experienced runners. It offers map integration and detailed data customisation, making it feel like you’re using a top-tier sports watch. However, Apple’s Workout app has also improved in recent years, with features like Pacer mode to help you keep a steady pace or even try for a personal best.

New runner? No problem — here’s how to join in

Don’t worry if you’re new to running or haven’t tackled 5K before. There’s no need to run the whole distance without stopping. A walk/run strategy works just as well. Try running for one minute and then walking for two — keep repeating until you hit the 5K mark.

This flexible approach means anyone can join the celebration and claim the badge, no matter their fitness level. It’s a great way to start building a running habit and having the badge as a goal might be the nudge you need to get moving.

Whatever your chosen method, ensure the workout is tracked and categorised as a run on your Apple Watch. For it to count, it must meet the 5K requirement and be completed today, June 4.

Celebrate movement wherever you are

Apple’s limited-edition activity awards are a fun way to stay motivated and join a global community of fitness enthusiasts. So whether you’re running in your local park, on a treadmill, or down a quiet country road, today is the perfect day to get active, earn your award, and celebrate Global Running Day 2025.
