Apple hits key milestone in foldable iPhone development

Apple’s foldable iPhone has reached a key milestone with a working prototype, and the company is eyeing a potential launch in the second half of 2026.

According to sources close to the company’s supply chain, Apple has taken a big step in creating its first foldable iPhone. You can now expect the long-rumoured device to move from concept to reality, as it has officially reached the “Prototype 1” or “P1” stage—a crucial part of the development process.

DigiTimes first reported the news, which revealed that the prototype passed its initial phase in June. This milestone is important because the device has gone from a basic, non-functional model to a fully working prototype ready for real-world testing.

Working prototype now in testing

If everything goes according to plan, Apple will finish testing this working prototype by the end of 2025. After that, it will move into the following major stage, the Engineering Verification Test (EVT), where the design and components undergo more detailed checks. This timeline means the foldable iPhone might be ready for release as early as the second half of next year.

Apple’s entry into the foldable market marks what’s being called “a major shake-up” for its iPhone lineup. You might notice a major design shift if you’re used to the traditional iPhone. And yes, all signs point to the device with a premium price tag—rumoured to be over S$3,000, making it one of Apple’s most expensive phones yet.

What to expect from Apple’s foldable iPhone

Although the final design hasn’t been confirmed, leaks suggest that Apple may prefer a layout similar to the Google Pixel Fold rather than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold. This would mean a more compact outer screen when folded and a tablet-like inner screen when opened.

Rumours suggest the foldable iPhone will feature a 5.49-inch cover display and a larger 7.74-inch foldable display. These two screens offer convenience and full-screen multitasking, possibly improving entertainment, productivity, and experience.

One of the most talked-about features is Apple’s alleged success in developing a completely crease-free display. If true, this would set the foldable iPhone apart from rivals, as many current foldables suffer from visible crease lines that can affect usability and aesthetics.

Advanced hinge and premium materials

Another standout detail is the foldable iPhone’s hinge system. Sources say Apple has developed a “much higher-quality hinge” than currently available. This hinge may be built using liquid metal, a material known for its durability and smooth movement, which could make folding and unfolding the device much more seamless.

Apple hasn’t officially commented on any of these developments, but if the current pace continues, you’ll likely see more leaks and official announcements over the next year. The company seems determined to enter the foldable market with a product that meets expectations and sets a new standard.

If you’re looking for a high-end device that combines cutting-edge design with Apple’s usual polish, the foldable iPhone might be worth waiting for.
