Apple will unveil a new ‘Passwords’ app next week

Apple plans to unveil a new Passwords app at WWDC to enhance password management and security across devices, including support for Windows.

Apple is set to introduce a new app called Passwords to help you manage your login information, according to a Bloomberg report. The announcement is expected to take place at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) next week.

Currently, Apple allows you to save your passwords across your iPhone, iPad, or Vision Pro using iCloud Keychain. The new Passwords app will work similarly, syncing through iCloud, but it will offer additional features. Your logins will be conveniently organised into different categories, such as accounts, Wi-Fi networks, and passkeys. This structure aims to relieve you from the hassle of managing your various logins, making it easier and more efficient for you.

According to Bloomberg, the Passwords app will also be available for Windows users. No information yet exists about support for Android devices.

Upcoming software integration

The Passwords app is expected to be introduced in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15. Like other password managers, such as LastPass and 1Password, this app will be able to generate and store passwords for you. It will use advanced algorithms to create strong, unique passwords for each of your accounts, and these passwords will be securely stored in your iCloud Keychain. This will help enhance your security by ensuring that you have strong, unique passwords for each of your accounts.

Other features of the Passwords app will include autofill for usernames and passwords, making it quicker and easier to log in to your accounts. Additionally, the app will have the capability to create authentication codes, similar to what Google Authenticator offers. This two-factor authentication feature will provide an extra layer of security, reassuring you about the safety of your online accounts.

Anticipated WWDC announcements

Apple is eagerly anticipated to reveal several new features during WWDC on June 10. There are exciting rumours that iOS 18 will include new AI features for the iPhone, aiming to improve the user experience with smart functionalities. A major overhaul for Siri is also highly anticipated, which could significantly enhance the virtual assistant’s capabilities, sparking your excitement for the future of technology.

Overall, the Passwords app is poised to be a significant addition to Apple’s ecosystem, providing a more streamlined and secure way for you to manage your passwords across different devices. With its enhanced features and integration with other Apple devices, the Passwords app could potentially bolster your cybersecurity, making it harder for hackers to gain unauthorised access to your accounts.
