The system pairs an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU with an Intel Core Ultra 9 processor 290HX Plus, putting high-end mobile gaming hardware into a small desktop form factor. ASUS is positioning the machine for gaming, content creation and AI workloads, with a semi-transparent chassis that separates it from the standard ROG NUC line.
A smaller desktop built around high-end mobile parts
The ROG NUC 16 Edition 20 uses an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU with 24GB of GDDR7 memory. ASUS lists the graphics processor at 1,824 AI TOPS, a measure used to describe AI processing performance, and says the system is designed for advanced rendering, generative AI workloads and demanding AAA games.
The graphics processor supports NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 for higher gaming performance and NVIDIA Studio for creative workflows. It is paired with an Intel Core Ultra 9 processor 290HX Plus, with the CPU and GPU delivering up to 300 watts of combined power.
That level of hardware places more pressure on cooling than a typical mini PC. ASUS has built the system with a triple-fan design and dual vapour chamber, which are intended to help sustain performance during demanding sessions while keeping noise levels down.
The company also states that the thermal modules are selected from the top 10% of production and deliver up to 21% better cooling performance than the previous generation. A dedicated SSD heatsink is included to draw heat away from storage, with ASUS claiming 18.5% lower SSD temperatures compared with configurations without a dedicated heatsink.
Storage, memory and connectivity support heavier setups
The ROG NUC 16 Edition 20 ships with Windows 11 Home, two 32GB DDR5-6400 CSO-DIMM modules, and a 2TB M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe 5.0 SSD.
Memory support goes up to 64GB, either through DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM or DDR5-6400 CSO-DIMM configurations. For storage, the system supports 1TB to 4TB M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe 4.0×4 SSDs and 1TB to 4TB M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe 5.0×4 SSDs.
Connectivity is aimed at users who want the machine to sit at the centre of a compact gaming or creator setup. The system includes Intel Killer WiFi 7, Bluetooth 5.4 and 2.5G LAN.
Front ports include one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, an audio jack and a 3.5mm stereo headset jack. The rear includes one Thunderbolt 4 port, four USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, two HDMI 2.1 ports, two DisplayPort 2.1 ports, 2.5G LAN, DC input and a Kensington lock.
ASUS says the machine can support five 4K displays, giving it room for multi-monitor gaming, streaming, editing or workstation-style use.
The chassis is part of the anniversary pitch
The ROG NUC 16 Edition 20 uses a dark semi-transparent chassis with gold detailing and red accents. The front panel gives a partial view of the components inside, while the system can be placed vertically or horizontally using a removable stand.
ASUS describes the product as part of its ROG anniversary line, after taking over Intel’s NUC product line in 2024. The system also has a toolless design for easier access to internal components.
The compact body measures 282.4 x 189.5 x 56.5mm and weighs 3.12kg. ASUS states that the machine has been tested against the US military-grade MIL-STD-810H standard, covering conditions including extreme temperatures, pressure and everyday wear.
