Audio-Technica launches affordable reference-grade ATH-R30x headphones at S$139

Audio-Technica's new ATH-R30x open-back headphones offer reference-grade sound for just S$139, which is ideal for creators and everyday listening.

If you’re looking for high-quality sound without breaking the bank, you’ll want to check out the new Audio-Technica ATH-R30x. Launched earlier this month at CanJam Singapore, these headphones are the most affordable option yet in Audio-Technica’s updated R-series of open-back, reference-grade headphones.

Earlier this year, Audio-Technica updated its R-series. It started with the ATH-R70xa and ATH-R50x, both featuring powerful 45mm dynamic drivers and a new headband design—a shift away from the older ATH-R70’s wing-style support pads. These upgrades offered better comfort and performance for serious listeners and content creators.

Now, the ATH-R30x has joined the line-up. Like the other models in the series, you get an open-back design and the same updated headband system, but with a 40mm dynamic driver instead. According to Audio-Technica, this model is specially tuned for home studio production, multimedia content creation, and detailed everyday listening.

You might notice that the ATH-R30x lacks a detachable cable—unlike the others, it comes with a fixed wire. While this might not be a deal-breaker, it’s something to consider if you prefer more flexibility with your gear.

A solid performer for the price

The ATH-R30x is a very capable performer. Even though it uses a smaller driver than the ATH-R70xa, it still delivers surprisingly close-quality sound.

The overall sound is warm, balanced, and smooth. It doesn’t come across as too sharp or tiring, which makes it ideal for long listening sessions. Thanks to the headphones’ full-bodied and natural presentation, you might feel like you’re listening to a pair of speakers.

However, if you’re used to high-end audio gear, you may feel the ATH-R30x lacks a bit of sharpness and detail. It doesn’t sound as precise or fast as the more expensive reference headphones. That said, remember that the demo at CanJam was done using unfamiliar equipment and through Spotify, which still doesn’t offer lossless audio. These factors could have affected the experience.

Also, if you value removable cables — whether for easy replacement or convenience — the fixed cable might feel like a bit of a letdown. But considering everything this headphone offers, it’s still an impressive package.

An excellent starting point for your audiophile journey

What makes the ATH-R30x stand out is the price. For just S$139 (around US$103), you get a reference-style open-back headphone designed for creators and everyday listeners. That’s excellent value, especially if you’re starting your audiophile journey or looking for something reliable to use in a home studio.

You won’t need to spend a fortune to get good sound. The ATH-R30x proves you can get solid performance, comfort, and style from a trusted brand at an affordable price.

Availability and pricing

The Audio-Technica ATH-R30x is available now for S$139 (US$103). It’s available from the Audio-Technica official store and online retailers like Lazada and Shopee.
