Borderlands 4 delivers a first look filled with chaos at The Game Awards

Discover what’s new in Borderlands 4, launching in 2025 with fresh gameplay, a tyrannical villain, and chaotic adventures on the planet Kairos.

At this year’s Game Awards, 2K and Gearbox Software unveiled an exciting first glimpse of Borderlands 4, scheduled for release in 2025. The reveal included a trailer that introduced fans to The Timekeeper, a formidable new antagonist who rules over the newly discovered planet of Kairos with an iron fist. Amidst a backdrop of perfect Order, a cataclysmic event threatens to unleash chaos across this perilous world, setting the stage for the latest installment in the acclaimed series.

A leap forward in the looter-shooter genre

Borderlands 4 is poised to redefine the looter-shooter genre, crafted with passion by the developers who pioneered it. This new chapter advances the series in both gameplay and narrative, providing fans with the quintessential Borderlands experience they cherish. Highlights of the upcoming game include:

  • Thrilling action and new badass Vault Hunters equipped with billions of innovative and deadly weapons, all set against the tyrannical backdrop of Kairos.
  • The most intricate and varied skill trees yet, offering players unprecedented freedom to tailor their characters. Coupled with an expansive loot system, adventurers can fine-tune their strategies to best suit their play styles.
  • Enhanced mobility through new traversal mechanics, including a summonable vehicle for navigating Kairos’s striking landscapes. This feature complements dynamic combat and adds a fresh layer to the treasure hunt.
  • The option to play solo or in cooperative mode with up to three friends, exploring a vast sci-fi world filled with spontaneous combat, challenging bosses, diverse loot, and a memorable cast of characters.

Gearbox’s vision for the next chapter

Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford shared his enthusiasm about the upcoming release, stating, “Borderlands 4 is about freedom and being badass. This is by far the biggest and most insane world we’ve ever made – it’s overloaded with jerkface ratnozzle scrote monsters that need to be put down with the most over-the-top hardcore nuts op guns and loot in any game ever. Oh, and the story also seriously kicks ass!”

The game is set to launch in 2025 and will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. It is currently available to be added to wishlists.

Having sold more than 87 million copies, the Borderlands series has received widespread acclaim for its unique blend of immersive storytelling and unparalleled arsenal of firearms. As fans eagerly anticipate this latest addition, Borderlands 4 promises to build on its legacy as an essential play for both veterans and newcomers to the series.
