Canon introduces budget-friendly RF 16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM lens

Canon unveils the RF 16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM lens, which offers a compact design, a bright aperture, and affordability for photographers and videographers.

Canon has introduced the RF 16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM, a full-frame ultra-wide-angle zoom lens for its RF mount lineup. This lens combines affordability, portability, and quality, making it an attractive option for photographers and videographers.

A versatile lens with a bright aperture

The RF 16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM boasts a constant bright aperture of f/2.8 throughout its zoom range, allowing for excellent performance in low-light situations and greater control over depth of field. Canon has positioned this lens as its second non-professional-grade constant aperture zoom lens.

Despite its non-professional designation, Canon assures users this lens is built to the same standard as its premium L-series lenses. The lens features a weather-sealed ring and mount joints and is resistant to dust and moisture, making it suitable for outdoor use in varying conditions.

Lightweight and compact design

One of the standout features of this lens is its compact size and lightweight design. Measuring 91mm in height when retracted and weighing only 445g, the RF 16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM is significantly smaller and lighter than Canon’s RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM lens. This makes it a great choice for travel, as it can easily fit into smaller camera bags without adding much weight.

The lens construction includes 16 elements arranged in 13 groups. Two aspherical elements and four UD (ultra-low dispersion) elements are included, which work together to reduce image distortions and chromatic aberrations while ensuring sharp, high-quality images.

Designed for both photos and videos

Canon’s STM (Stepper Motor Technology) provides smooth, quiet, and accurate autofocus, making this lens ideal for still photography and videography. It is particularly well-suited for video shooting, offering silent transitions and support for focus breathing correction. The lens can digitally adjust focus fluctuations when paired with compatible cameras, delivering seamless and professional-looking footage.

The lens’s wide focal range of 16-28mm is perfect for capturing expansive landscapes, architecture, and dynamic video scenes. Its versatility, semi-rugged build, and excellent optical performance make it a practical option for Canon RF mount users who need a reliable and portable wide-angle lens.

The RF 16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM is expected to hit shelves in February. While pricing has yet to be confirmed in many regions, the lens will retail in the US for US$1,149. This price point makes it much more affordable than Canon’s professional-grade RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM, which costs around S$4,049.

Canon’s latest offering is designed to provide quality and functionality without breaking the bank, giving photography enthusiasts and professionals a more budget-friendly option for wide-angle photography.
