Canon marks PowerShot milestone with limited G7 X Mark III edition
Canon marks 30 years of PowerShot with a limited G7 X Mark III edition focused on design and collectability.
Canon is marking three decades of its PowerShot compact camera lineup with a limited commemorative version of the PowerShot G7 X Mark III, introducing a cosmetic refresh anchored on design and collectability rather than new imaging hardware.

The announcement comes as the PowerShot range reaches its 30-year milestone in 2026, tracing back to the launch of the PowerShot 600 in July 1996. Over that period, Canon reports that cumulative production of compact digital cameras, including the IXUS series, exceeded 200 million units globally by December 2025.
A legacy built on accessibility
PowerShot has historically been positioned as an accessible imaging system, spanning entry-level users through to enthusiasts. The lineup expanded across multiple series to address different usage patterns, from compact everyday photography to zoom-focused shooting and video-centric workflows.
Canon continues to segment the range into three core series. The G series focuses on image quality and feature density within compact bodies, the V series is aligned with video capture use cases, and the SX series centres on extended zoom capabilities.
This structure reflects how compact cameras have adapted to shifting consumer expectations, particularly as smartphones have absorbed much of the entry-level photography market.
Commemorative design over hardware change
The 30th anniversary edition of the PowerShot G7 X Mark III does not introduce new imaging specifications. Instead, it retains the existing hardware platform first released in August 2019, including a 1.0-inch stacked CMOS sensor with approximately 20.1 effective megapixels, a bright aperture lens, and 4.2x optical zoom.
Video functionality remains a key component, with features such as the Video Blog recording mode aimed at creators who prioritise portability and ease of use.
The commemorative variant differentiates itself through design elements. It features a graphite finish, a knurled control ring, and a dedicated 30th anniversary logo. Canon is positioning the model as a collector-oriented release, supported by special packaging and a limited-edition wrist strap that also carries the anniversary branding.
“Thirty years of iconic legacy, captured in one extraordinary collector’s piece. The limited quantity commemorative edition comes with an exclusive graphite finish, a knurled control ring, and a distinguished 30th anniversary logo. Complete with a special commemorative packaging and a collector’s edition wrist strap, both of which comes with the 30th anniversary logo. This isn’t just a camera; it is history in your hands.”
Pricing and regional availability
The PowerShot G7 X Mark III 30th Anniversary Commemorative Edition is priced at $$1,299 and will be sold through Canon authorised dealers. Availability timelines have not been specified.
The special packaging and wrist strap are limited to selected markets, including Singapore and several countries across Southeast Asia and South Asia, alongside Hong Kong and Taiwan.
A compact category under pressure
The anniversary release highlights the enduring presence of compact cameras within Canon’s portfolio, even as the category has contracted in recent years. Rather than introducing new technical capabilities, the commemorative model leans on brand history and design differentiation.
Canon indicates it will continue to evolve the PowerShot lineup in response to changing user needs, with a focus on advancing imaging technologies and creative capabilities within the format.
