Canon unveils next-generation video production equipment to elevate cinematic storytelling

Canon launches EOS C50, RF85mm f/1.4L VCM, and CN5x11 IAS T R1/P1 to support next-generation video production and storytelling.

Canon has introduced three new professional video production tools aimed at meeting the changing needs of cinema, broadcast, and digital content creators. The launch includes the EOS C50, Canon’s smallest Cinema EOS camera, the RF85mm f/1.4L VCM hybrid lens, and the CN5x11 IAS T R1/P1, the company’s widest CINE-SERVO lens.

According to Canon, they have been designed to provide greater flexibility, allowing creative professionals to work across formats ranging from short social media videos to documentaries, feature films, and live broadcasts.

Andrew Koh, Senior Vice President and Head of Singapore Operations Group at Canon Singapore, said, “Today’s creative professionals need advanced equipment that can keep pace with the depths of their imagination. Canon’s latest product innovations empower both enthusiasts and professionals to push the boundaries of visual storytelling and take their productions to greater heights. With these new tools, creators have more freedom to craft, refine, and reimagine their content anytime, anywhere.”

EOS C50: Compact and versatile

The hybrid RF-mount EOS C50 is the most compact Cinema EOS camera to date. It features a new 7K full-frame CMOS sensor and a DIGIC DV 7 processor, enabling internal 7K 60P RAW recording. It also supports high frame rates of up to 4K 120P and 2K 180P, while producing 32MP still photos.

One of its key highlights is Open Gate recording in Full Frame 3:2 mode, a first for Cinema EOS. This allows editors to reframe both horizontal and vertical shots from the same footage, while the use of anamorphic lenses can deliver a tall, immersive cinematic look. Its Simultaneous Recording function further boosts efficiency by capturing both full-angle and cropped images at once.

The EOS C50 uses Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with deep learning, which enables fast and accurate subject detection and tracking. Autofocus settings can also be customised to match different scenes or subjects. Designed with adaptability in mind, it supports RF-mount lenses, including the new RF85mm f/1.4L VCM, as well as EF and PL lenses through adapters. Its modular build and mounting options allow it to integrate easily with rigging setups and be used in either horizontal or vertical orientation.

For sound recording, the detachable handle unit includes two full-size 3-pin XLR terminals. The EOS C50 also provides connectivity for livestreaming with UVC/UAC support and remote operation via Canon’s XC Protocol. Through Canon’s Content Transfer Professional app and Frame.io’s Camera to Cloud service, footage can be transmitted or shared in real time.

RF85mm f/1.4L VCM: Hybrid performance for close-up storytelling

Canon’s RF85mm f/1.4L VCM is the latest addition to its hybrid photo-video prime lens series. As the first 85mm model in the line-up, it offers medium telephoto reach suited for close-ups and portrait-style framing. It combines high optical performance with features such as a clickless aperture ring and optical focus-breathing control, making it equally effective for stills and video.

The lens weighs 636g, measures 99.3mm in length, and shares a consistent filter thread size with others in the series, helping reduce time spent rebalancing equipment during lens changes. Its dust- and drip-resistant build, along with coatings to minimise ghosting and flare, make it durable enough for demanding environments. Advanced lens elements ensure sharpness across the frame.

CN5x11 IAS T R1/P1: Wide and lightweight cine-servo lens

Canon also unveiled the CN5x11 IAS T R1/P1, its widest and lightest CINE-SERVO zoom lens. At 3kg, it provides an ultra-wide 11mm focal length with a 100-degree angle of view. With a removable servo unit, it offers flexible configurations for use in film sets, live events, or studio production. It is compatible with gimbals, cranes, and wire cams for more dynamic shooting.

The lens comes with Canon’s e-Xs V Digital Drive Unit for precision control, ergonomic servo handling, and USB-C connectivity. Available in RF and PL mount versions, it supports a wide range of workflows. The PL version integrates with Cooke /i Technology and ZEISS eXtended Data for metadata output, while the RF version adds Dual Pixel CMOS AF support and advanced lens correction.

Canon’s latest line-up is expected to enhance creative flexibility across the production spectrum, offering filmmakers and content creators tools that combine portability, advanced optics, and robust connectivity.
