Casio revives the original G-Shock with a modern twist

Casio revives its iconic G-Shock DW-5000C with the DW-5000R, blending original charm with modern features and eco-friendly materials.

It’s been over four decades since Casio introduced the first G-Shock digital watch, and now the brand is bringing back the iconic design in its most faithful recreation yet. The new G-Shock DW-5000R mirrors the original DW-5000C, which debuted in 1983, capturing every detail from the strap’s length to the precise positioning of its dimples.

A nostalgic journey to G-Shock’s origins

When the G-Shock DW-5000C first hit the market, it was more than just a watch—it was a breakthrough in durability. Its creator, Casio engineer Kikuo Ibe, was inspired after his mechanical watch broke from a fall. Determined to create a timepiece that could withstand daily wear and accidents, Ibe set out to design a watch with what he called “triple 10” resistance:

  • A 10-year battery life.
  • Water resistance up to 10 bar.
  • The ability to survive a 10-metre drop.

What started as an innovative idea quickly became a cultural icon. G-Shock established itself as a leader in rugged timepieces, gaining popularity among professionals, adventurers, and streetwear enthusiasts. The DW-5000R taps into that nostalgic charm while celebrating the engineering that put G-Shock on the map.

What’s new and what stays the same

Although the DW-5000R stays true to its predecessor, there are subtle updates to meet modern expectations. The case size has grown slightly, from 41.6mm to 42.3mm, and the buttons are shorter than before. Another notable change is the water resistance marking, which now reads “20 BAR” instead of “200M.”

Casio has also made environmentally conscious choices for this model. The bezel and strap are crafted from biomass plastic to reduce the watch’s ecological impact. The watch features a new LED backlight for better visibility in low-light conditions while retaining classic functions like a stopwatch timer, multi-functional alarm, and calendar display.

The core construction remains unchanged, with a stainless steel case ensuring the same durability defined by the original model. Casio describes the DW-5000R as offering a “higher level of reproduction” than previous limited-edition reissues, suggesting this model may have a more permanent place in the G-Shock lineup.

Availability and pricing

The G-Shock DW-5000R will launch in Japan on December 13, priced at ¥33,000 (approximately US$217). Details about global availability and pricing outside Japan have yet to be confirmed.
