China seeks to advance technology with robots and 6G as the industry faces crossroads

China aims to advance technology with humanoid robots, 6G, and innovation centres as it tackles industrial challenges and strengthens its economy.

On July 5, China announced a commitment to significantly advance emerging industries, including cutting-edge fields such as humanoid robots, 6G mobile technology, and atomic-level manufacturing. These developments aim to bolster China’s position in the high-growth tech sector while maintaining the strength of its traditional industries.

Pioneering breakthroughs in technology

According to Jin Zhuanglong, head of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China’s unique system allows it to concentrate resources on specific targets, addressing gaps in core technologies caused by containment measures from the United States. At a press conference, Jin stated, “Although China’s industrial development has made significant progress, we are at a crucial stage of transitioning from large to strong and overcoming various hurdles.”

He acknowledged that China still needs to improve its key core technologies and basic industrial capabilities. Among the pioneering industries identified for focus are brain-computer interfaces, the metaverse, the next-generation internet, quantum computing, and deep sea and aerospace exploration. Jin also emphasised the importance of building national manufacturing innovation centres in emerging fields, such as biomanufacturing.

Industrial growth and economic impact

In 2023, China’s total industrial added value reached 39.9 trillion yuan (approximately US$5.5 trillion), representing 31.7 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). The manufacturing industry’s added value contributed 26.2 percent of GDP, accounting for about one-third of the world’s total. This highlights the significant role of manufacturing in China’s economy and its impact on the global market.

China’s strategic focus on emerging industries aims to bridge technological gaps and enhance its overall industrial strength. By investing in advanced technology and innovation, China seeks to maintain its competitive edge in the global market while supporting the growth of traditional industries.

Prospects and innovation

The commitment to developing national manufacturing innovation centres and focusing on cutting-edge technologies reflects China’s long-term vision for industrial growth. These initiatives are expected to drive technological advancements, create new opportunities for economic development, and strengthen China’s position as a global leader in technology and innovation.

As China continues to invest in and prioritise emerging industries, it aims to overcome current challenges and achieve sustainable growth. The country’s efforts to advance technology and innovation will play a crucial role in shaping the future of its industrial development and maintaining its competitive edge in the global market.
