Commvault introduces Clumio Backtrack for near-instant recovery of Amazon S3 data

Commvault launches Clumio Backtrack, a scalable solution for instant data recovery in Amazon S3, ensuring resilience for cloud environments.

Commvault, a leading provider of cyber resilience and data protection solutions for hybrid cloud environments, has unveiled its latest innovation, Clumio Backtrack. This new capability allows enterprises to swiftly and efficiently recover datasets stored in Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) to a specific version at a specific point in time. Designed for automation and scalability, Clumio Backtrack empowers IT, cloud operations, and security teams to address data errors, accidents, or cyberattacks with unprecedented speed and precision.

Clumio Backtrack leverages Amazon S3 Versioning to enable recovery of datasets ranging from single objects to entire buckets containing billions of files. This game-changing capability is poised to redefine large-scale data recovery in cloud environments.

Recovering data at scale in seconds

Amazon S3 Versioning already provides users with the ability to restore individual objects to previous versions. Clumio Backtrack enhances this functionality by introducing large-scale rollback capabilities. Powered by a serverless architecture, the solution dynamically scales to handle billions of objects, enabling rapid recovery even seconds after an incident is identified.

The use cases for such a solution are numerous. Organisations can roll back to a prior state before a user accidentally deleted critical data, before corrupted data from an application was uploaded, or even before a ransomware attack encrypted files. The automation and scale of Clumio Backtrack ensure minimal downtime and operational continuity during such events.

Commvault’s new offering significantly strengthens cyber resilience, particularly for large enterprises with complex cloud environments. “With the increasing complexity of enterprise data environments, businesses need fast, scalable, and secure data recovery solutions for the cloud-first world,” said Woon Jung, CTO of Cloud Native at Commvault. “We’re thrilled to offer a level of granularity and point-in-time options for object recovery that spans billions of objects and can help customers drive even greater benefits from their cloud investments.”

Rising demand for robust data solutions

The cloud artificial intelligence (AI) market is projected to grow to over US$647 billion by 2030, with AI and machine learning (ML) driving massive data generation. Object storage solutions like Amazon S3 are increasingly crucial for managing these expanding workloads. Organisations rely on these solutions not only for storage capacity but also for the complexity they can handle, especially for AI-driven tasks.

Raphael Meyerowitz, Partner Go to Market VP at Presidio, highlighted the importance of Clumio Backtrack for modern enterprises: “At Presidio, we understand the critical need for agility and resilience in today’s cloud world. As Commvault continues to push the boundaries of cyber resilience and cloud innovation, we’re thrilled to extend our collaboration to deliver true resilience and operational continuity to large-scale AWS environments.”

Expanding cyber resilience capabilities

Commvault’s recent acquisitions and innovations underscore its commitment to supporting cloud-first customers. The company has introduced solutions like Cloud Rewind, Air Gap Protect, and Cleanroom Recovery to strengthen its position as a leader in cyber resilience. Clumio Backtrack adds another layer of protection, making it easier for organisations to safeguard their data and ensure business continuity in the face of increasing threats.

Availability and pricing

Commvault will offer early access to Clumio Backtrack in December, with a global rollout expected in early 2025. Enterprises interested in leveraging this advanced recovery solution are encouraged to explore it as part of their cloud data management strategies.
