Fitbit faces battery issues after mandatory update

Fitbit Versa 3 and Sense users report major battery issues after a mandatory update to prevent overheating, leaving many frustrated.

You may have noticed a recent mandatory firmware update if you own a Fitbit Versa 3 or Sense. Google, which owns Fitbit, says the update is designed to reduce the risk of battery overheating and limit battery capacity. However, many users are now reporting a serious drop in battery life.

Google has stated that only a “limited number” of devices are affected by the overheating issue. To compensate impacted users, the company is offering a US$50 credit. But this hasn’t satisfied frustrated customers, who say their smartwatches have become almost unusable.

Users frustrated with major battery drain

While preventing overheating is important, many users say the update has caused more problems than it solves. Reports on Fitbit’s forums and subreddit suggest that devices that once lasted between two and six days now struggle to last a single day. Some users argue this makes their smartwatches nearly useless.

Google’s official notice acknowledges that the update may lead to “shorter periods between charges.” Still, many Fitbit users see a huge difference between charging more often and needing to recharge daily. Fitbit’s smartwatches have been popular for their long battery life, so this update has left many feeling let down.

Fitbit’s battery problems aren’t new

This isn’t the first time Fitbit has faced battery-related issues. The company was recently fined US$12 million after its Ionic watches overheated and burned 78 users. In addition, Google recently issued a similar update for its Pixel 4A phones, limiting battery performance and offering affected users a US$100 credit.

A lawsuit filed in 2022 also claimed that overheating problems extended beyond the Ionic. Plaintiffs alleged that the Versa Lite and Versa 2 were affected, and they even provided photos of burns, which they said came from devices like the Fitbit Blaze, Inspire, Inspire 2, Sense, and Versa 3. The latest firmware update suggests battery overheating was an issue with the Versa 3 and Sense models.

For years, Fitbit users have posted complaints about battery problems, sudden battery drains, and even skin burns or irritation. A quick look at the r/Fitbit subreddit reveals numerous frustrated users sharing their negative experiences with Fitbit’s customer support. The latest battery issues add to concerns that have existed long before Google acquired Fitbit.
