Huawei Mate XT triple-folding phone could launch in more markets

Huawei’s Mate XT triple-folding phone has received UAE certification, hinting at an international launch. Here’s what makes it stand out.

Huawei’s triple-folding smartphone is on its way to international markets. Recent reports suggest that the Huawei Mate XT has received certification from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a sign that it may soon be available outside China.

According to Huawei Central, the device was recently listed in the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) database, confirming that it has been approved for sale in the UAE. The TDRA functions similarly to Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and is responsible for registering and approving telecommunications equipment before it can be sold.

The Huawei Mate XT appears under model number GRL-LX9 and registration number ER41137/25. The certified version is expected to be nearly identical to the one launched exclusively in China, with no major changes to its hardware.

Approval from a telecommunications authority typically signals that a brand is preparing to introduce a device to a new market, whether for general consumers or business users. This latest development suggests Huawei could expand Mate XT’s availability beyond its home market.

What makes the Huawei Mate XT unique?

Huawei’s Mate XT is the only commercially available triple-folding smartphone, making it highly distinctive. Here’s a quick recap of what makes it special.

The phone launched in China in September 2024 as part of Huawei’s ultra-premium Ultimate Design collection, which also includes the Huawei Watch Ultimate. To reinforce its luxury appeal, Huawei enlisted Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau as the Mate XT’s brand ambassador.

One of the phone’s biggest highlights is its unique triple-folding display, which unfolds like a Japanese byōbu (a traditional folding screen used as a partition). When folded, it functions like a standard 6.4-inch smartphone. However, when fully expanded, it reveals an additional screen segment, creating a 7.9-inch tablet-like display for an enhanced viewing experience.

Expected pricing and global launch rumours

Based on its launch in China and currency conversions, the Huawei Mate XT’s estimated retail price is around US$2,700 (S$3,660). The highest-end model with 1TB storage is expected to cost approximately US$3,250 (S$4,400).

Rumours have also circulated that the Mate XT could receive a global launch in Q1 2025. While such speculation initially seemed uncertain, the recent UAE certification strongly suggests that an international rollout could be on the horizon.
