iPhone 17 Pro may include a pro camera app and an enhanced telephoto lens

The iPhone 17 Pro may introduce an 8x zoom, a professional camera app, and a new control button, according to unverified leaks.

Apple’s next-generation iPhone is expected to feature significant improvements in camera capabilities, according to unverified reports circulating online. The iPhone 17 Pro models, expected to launch in September, may introduce an advanced optical zoom system, a new professional camera app, and an additional physical control button.

These claims, initially reported by MacRumors, were shared by an anonymous source who alleges familiarity with a commercial for the iPhone 17 Pro currently being produced by a film company. While the source’s identity remains undisclosed and lacks a track record of credible leaks, MacRumors notes that the film company in question has publicly listed Apple among its clients. Nonetheless, the site has not been able to independently verify any of the information, urging readers to approach the claims with caution.

Enhanced telephoto capabilities may be in development

One of the most striking rumours is a significant upgrade to the iPhone’s telephoto camera system. The source claims the iPhone 17 Pro models could feature up to 8x optical zoom, a substantial increase over the 5x zoom currently available in the iPhone 16 Pro range.

In addition to the increased zoom capability, the tipster suggests the telephoto lens may have a movable design. This would enable the iPhone to achieve optical zoom at multiple focal lengths rather than being limited to a fixed zoom range. If true, such an innovation could offer photographers more versatility and creative control when capturing images from varying distances.

This claim, however, has drawn scepticism, as major hardware features are typically revealed through more established channels months in advance. The lack of supporting evidence has led some observers to question whether such a leap in camera hardware is feasible within the upcoming product cycle.

A professional camera app may be on the horizon

The rumour that has gained the most traction concerns a new native camera app, specifically designed for professional photography and videography. According to the source, this app would offer users enhanced manual controls, giving them more flexibility and precision when shooting with their iPhone.

While Apple has already introduced powerful computational photography tools in recent years, many professional users have long requested a more robust, pro-level camera interface. Currently, those seeking advanced controls often turn to third-party apps. A dedicated first-party solution from Apple could appeal to content creators looking for seamless integration with the iPhone’s hardware and software.

Of all the rumours mentioned, this one is seen by many as the most plausible. Introducing a pro camera app would align with Apple’s broader strategy of appealing to professional users while leveraging the growing popularity of mobile photography and videography.

Potential new hardware control sparks debate

The third rumoured feature is an additional physical Camera Control button located on the top side of the device. The existing button would reportedly remain unchanged, meaning the iPhone 17 Pro could feature two separate buttons dedicated to camera functions.

This idea has raised eyebrows among industry watchers. Unlike software updates or app features, changes to physical design tend to be known well in advance due to leaks in Apple’s supply chain. Additionally, it remains unclear what specific benefit a second camera button would provide, leading some to doubt the likelihood of this particular change.

With Apple typically announcing its new iPhone models in early September, confirmation or debunking of these rumours may arrive soon. Until then, enthusiasts will have to wait to see whether these camera upgrades will become reality or will remain as speculation.
