New Hue Secure video doorbell spotted in-app update

A Philips Hue app update has revealed a new Hue Secure video doorbell, hinting at a wired design and Bluetooth/Wi-Fi connectivity.

The Philips Hue app update has unintentionally revealed a new product—the Hue Secure video doorbell. First reported by Hueblog, the unannounced device appeared in a section of the app that provides instructions for adding devices without a QR code.

Screenshots taken from the iOS Hue app by Jennifer Pattison Tuohy show a simple, tall, rectangular video doorbell. It features what appears to be a large button surrounded by an LED ring. At the time of writing, the doorbell remains visible in the app.

Wired installation and connectivity details are hinted at in the app

Although full setup instructions were inaccessible, some details could be gathered from the available information. The Hue Secure video doorbell is a wired device, as the app mentions low-voltage errors and requires physical installation before setup. It is also expected to use Bluetooth, likely for initial setup, and Wi-Fi for regular operation.

According to Hueblog, the doorbell is not expected to launch until autumn, meaning official pricing and specifications are yet to be revealed. However, looking at Hue’s existing Secure camera range may suggest what to expect. The brand’s floodlight and indoor/outdoor cameras, launched in 2023, offer 1080p video quality, two-way communication, and end-to-end encryption. They also feature intelligent alerts for detecting people, pets, and vehicles.

No HomeKit Secure Video support is anticipated

One limitation of Hue’s current camera lineup is the lack of support for Apple’s HomeKit Secure Video. Given that the existing Secure cameras do not include this feature, it is unlikely that the upcoming doorbell will either.

With the accidental leak now drawing attention, Philips Hue may soon have to confirm the device officially. Until then, users will have to wait for more details on pricing, features, and a potential release date.
