Nintendo Switch 2 reveal: Everything you need to know

Nintendo Switch 2, confirmed for 2025, will have a larger design, improved Joy-Con, backward compatibility, and a new Mario Kart game.

Nintendo has officially unveiled the much-anticipated Switch 2, offering a detailed glimpse into its new features and design through a reveal video. The announcement has confirmed several updates, including larger size, upgraded Joy-Con controllers, backward compatibility, and a new Mario Kart game.

Nintendo confirmed that the Switch 2 will launch in 2025, though an exact release date remains unknown. However, global hands-on events for the console are scheduled to run until June 1, 2025, suggesting it won’t be released before mid-year. Fans eager for more details can look forward to the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct on April 2, 2025, where additional features and games are expected to be unveiled.

Bigger size, improved controllers, and extra ports

Switch 2 features a larger screen and Joy-Con controllers than the original model. A significant upgrade includes a magnetic snap-on system for the controllers, replacing the rail connections used in the first Switch. The right Joy-Con sports a new square button, though its purpose remains a mystery.

Another exciting addition is mouse-like functionality for the Joy-Con controllers, confirmed in the reveal video. The console also includes two USB-C ports, one at the top and one at the bottom, enhancing convenience for charging and docking.

Backward compatibility and a new Mario Kart

Nintendo has ensured backward compatibility for the Switch 2, allowing you to play both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games and exclusive titles for the updated console. However, some older Switch games may not be fully compatible. In a thrilling teaser, the reveal video showcased a new Mario Kart game, which fans speculate is Mario Kart 9.

What’s next?

With hands-on events planned globally and an official Nintendo Direct scheduled for April 2025, Nintendo is building anticipation for what promises to be a groundbreaking launch. From its larger design and innovative controllers to backward compatibility and new games, the Switch 2 is shaping to be a worthy successor to its predecessor.
