Samsung unveils an AI strategy for Galaxy devices, focusing on collaboration and responsibility

Samsung unveils its AI strategy for Galaxy devices, focusing on collaboration and responsible AI and aiming for 200 million AI devices by the end of 2024.

On July 16, Samsung introduced its AI-capable Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6. During the launch, Samsung outlined its vision for the future of Galaxy AI, highlighting its approach and strategy in a fireside panel discussion with industry experts.

Key players in the discussion

The panel included prominent figures such as Dr. Chris Brauer from the University of London and Symmetry, Lucia Russo from the OECD, Don McGuire from Qualcomm, Won-Joon Choi from Samsung Electronics, Jenny Blackburn from Google, and Daehyun Kim from Samsung Research. Their hour-long discussion covered Samsung’s AI strategies and goals, providing insights into the company’s approach.

Samsung’s approach to mobile AI

Samsung focuses on “open collaboration” and “responsible AI” as the core principles of its AI strategy. The company emphasises that AI should serve people, not vice versa. A prime example is Samsung’s collaboration with Google on the generative AI model Gemini. Both companies worked together to introduce the Circle to Search feature, ensuring it aligned with their shared vision.

Samsung is committed to providing the best privacy protection and an excellent AI experience. The Galaxy AI Dashboard exemplifies this commitment, allowing users to choose whether AI operations occur in the cloud or entirely on-device. Responsible AI, as discussed by the OECD, involves not just safety but also regulation and policy, which are still evolving to keep pace with AI development.

Research by Symmetry revealed that frequent mobile AI users report a higher quality of life, citing improvements in productivity, self-expression, and personal relationships. Addressing these findings, Samsung emphasised its dedication to innovation and safety through three core principles: fairness, transparency, and accountability. The company is against creating “gimmick features” and instead focuses on research, user feedback, and delivering a desirable user experience.

Ambitious goals for Galaxy AI devices

Samsung announced impressive progress in its AI expansion. Over 100 million Galaxy AI devices have been in use since the beginning of 2024. The company aims to double this number, reaching 200 million devices by the end of the year, by expanding AI capabilities to older and newer devices.
