Sony will play a key role at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25, using its technology to enhance how sports fans experience the event. The championships will be held from 13 to 21 September at the Japan National Stadium.
Showcasing technology for sports coverage
As an official partner, Sony will provide a wide range of products to support media coverage and broadcasting. Its Alpha mirrorless cameras, G Master lenses, portable data transmitters, and system cameras will be used to capture and share athletes’ performances with audiences worldwide. These solutions are designed to give photographers and videographers the tools to create and deliver high-quality sports content.
Sony will also operate a Camera Service Booth at the Media Centre for accredited photographers. The company will offer access to around 150 cameras and 600 lenses, supported by a team of engineers and specialists to ensure smooth operations. This setup will also give Sony the opportunity to gather direct feedback from professionals to guide future product development.
Supporting fair competition and media training
Hawk-Eye Innovations, a Sony group company, will provide officiating support throughout the championships. Its video replay system will cover all track and field events, offering judges multiple camera angles to help with accurate decisions. If a violation is confirmed, the relevant footage will be shared with broadcasters, alongside graphics explaining the disqualification to help viewers better understand the ruling.
Sony is also contributing to the World Athletics Media Academy, a programme designed to nurture future sports journalists. Eleven young photographers from around the world will take part in a workshop, receiving guidance from experienced professionals and opportunities to shoot on the competition track. The initiative aims to encourage new perspectives in sports storytelling.
Engaging fans and communities
Beyond the stadium, Sony will create interactive experiences for the public. From 5 to 22 September, the Sony Store in Ginza will host a special exhibition titled “World Athletics Moments: More Than Meets the Eye.” The showcase will feature photographs from the championships and a motion tracking experience based on Hawk-Eye technology.
At the stadium itself, fans will be able to try out the Alpha series and the latest E-mount lenses at a dedicated booth. Sony is also working with Project KIBO, a children’s support organisation led by former Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai, to invite children and their guardians to the event. Activities will include a running workshop and a sports photography session led by a professional photographer.
The World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 will highlight Sony’s efforts to combine innovation with community engagement, offering fans and professionals new ways to experience and capture the excitement of athletics.
