Xiaomi Watch 2 and Watch 2 Pro receive Wear OS 4 update quietly – What’s new?

Xiaomi quietly rolls out Wear OS 4 to the Watch 2 and Watch 2 Pro, bringing new features, stability improvements, and more. Here's what you need to know.

If you own a Xiaomi Watch 2 or Watch 2 Pro, you may soon notice a quiet update on your device. Google’s Wear OS 4 is slowly making its way to these smartwatches, bringing new features and improvements. Though Xiaomi hasn’t officially announced this update, users across various regions have started receiving it.

The Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro launched in late 2023, marking the brand’s first foray into using Wear OS for its smartwatches. It was soon followed by the more affordable Watch 2 in February 2024. However, despite the significance of adopting Wear OS, Xiaomi has remained silent on the rollout of the latest Wear OS 4.

Early reports from users

As reported by Gadgets and Wearables, users of the Xiaomi Watch 2 and Watch 2 Pro have been discussing the update on Reddit. If you’re in the UK, Poland, or Spain, you may be among the first to receive the new software. The rollout appears to be gradual, and not every region has access to it yet.

Interestingly, users have noted that the update doesn’t automatically appear on their watches. Instead, those who have managed to install Wear OS 4 did so manually by navigating to the ‘Update Firmware’ section on their devices. So, if you haven’t received any notifications, it might be worth checking the firmware update settings on your watch.

Wear OS 4 brings exciting new features to the Xiaomi Watch 2 and Watch 2 Pro. According to users who have installed the update, you can expect new fonts, updated icons, and fresh watch faces. Beyond the visual tweaks, several bug fixes and stability improvements exist. One notable fix involves synchronising the Do Not Disturb mode, which has been an issue for some users.

Though Xiaomi hasn’t actively promoted the rollout, the addition of Wear OS 4 is a significant upgrade for their smartwatches. The company may be waiting for an official announcement to be made later. Alternatively, they might be keeping quiet due to the upcoming release of Wear OS 5, which could overshadow this update.

The appeal of Xiaomi’s Wear OS smartwatches

Xiaomi may not be the first brand that comes to mind when you think of smartwatches, but the combination of their affordable pricing and the inclusion of Wear OS makes them an attractive option for many. Compared to other brands like Apple and Samsung, Xiaomi’s watches are significantly cheaper, yet they still offer a solid experience for Android users. Additionally, unlike Huawei, Xiaomi’s smartwatches are available in the US, widening their appeal.

While the Xiaomi Watch 2 and Watch 2 Pro may not be the most advanced smartwatches on the market, the addition of Wear OS 4 helps keep them relevant. With new features and improved stability, they offer a decent option for anyone looking for an affordable smartwatch that runs Google’s operating system.
