Aetherdrift brings high-speed action to Magic: The Gathering fans

[output_post_excerpt]

Get ready for the ride of your life as Wizards of the Coast unveils Aetherdrift, the latest set for Magic: The Gathering (MTG), beginning with prerelease events on 7 February. Fans of the popular trading card game will experience a multiverse death race filled with adrenaline-fuelled gameplay. The full tabletop release is set for 14 February.

The high-stakes Ghirapur Grand Prix

Players will take the driver’s seat in the Ghirapur Grand Prix, a race that spans multiple planes, including Avishkar, Amonkhet, and Muraganda. The ultimate reward is the coveted Aetherspark, an artificial Planeswalker Spark. Legendary Planeswalker Chandra is among the competitors, aiming to win the Aetherspark for Nissa, who lost her own Spark during the events of March of the Machine.

Expect intense gameplay as you race through diverse environments at high speed. Will you reach Maximum Speed and cross the finish line in glory, or crash in a fiery blaze? Either way, players are encouraged to push their limits and go as fast as possible.

Race to Victory play program and country trophies

Southeast Asia’s Wizards Play Network (WPN) stores are shifting into gear with a special play program called “Race to Victory.” From 7 February to 30 April, players participating in eligible events will earn rewards. By playing in-store prerelease events, drafts, Commander sessions, and other formats, players can unlock exclusive items such as Campaign Pins representing the three universes of Aetherdrift, A3 posters of Graffiti Giants, race tags, and a custom Speed/Lifecounter.

The top three players from each WPN store who complete their Race to Victory tracking cards by 23 March will qualify for the regional championships. They’ll have the chance to win one of five Aetherspark trophies available across Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Each trophy will bear the name of the country where it was awarded.

New mechanics and card treatments

Aetherdrift introduces exciting new mechanics to enhance the gameplay. The Max Speed mechanic allows players to build momentum by increasing their speed level each turn, gaining power as they reach Maximum Speed. Players can further disrupt their opponents or boost their performance using the new Exhaust mechanic, a one-time effect that triggers strategically when needed.

Familiar mechanics like Vehicles and Mounts return in Aetherdrift, giving players options for high-tech machines or beasts of burden to aid them on their journey. Players will have plenty of ways to customise their racing experience and emerge victorious.

To add to the thrill, Aetherdrift features unique collectible cards. The ultimate prize, the Aetherspark, comes in a limited-edition Serialised Full-Art, Borderless Foil treatment, with only 500 cards printed globally. Each card is numbered (X/500) and available only in Collector Boosters.

Players can also claim First-Place Box Toppers with rare or mythic rare cards featuring a gold foil finish, included in every Aetherdrift Play Booster Display and Collector Booster Display. Additionally, stunning Graffiti Giant cards showcasing colossal artwork of the Gods will be available, along with race-themed Japan Showcase cards exclusive to Collector Boosters.

Land cards get a new twist as well, with Full-Art Panorama Basics and Full-Art Driver’s Seat Basic Lands added to the mix. Returning favourites like Borderless Dual Lands are also included, offering breathtaking landscapes from multiple planes.

A full lineup of products

Aetherdrift will be available in Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, two Commander Decks, Prerelease Packs, Bundles, and Finish Line Bundles. Whether you’re a competitive racer or a collector, Aetherdrift has something for everyone to enjoy as you navigate its fast-paced multiverse.
