Apple may launch more power-efficient OLED displays in 2027 iPhones

Apple may boost iPhone battery life in 2027 with LTPO3, a more efficient OLED display first tested on Apple Watch Series 10.

Apple is looking to make your future iPhone even better with a longer battery life thanks to smarter screen technology.

According to a recent report by The Elec, Apple plans to upgrade its iPhone displays in 2027 with a new type of power-saving OLED screen. This change could significantly increase the life of an iPhone on a single charge.

How Apple plans to improve its iPhone screens

At the heart of this upgrade is a more advanced version of LTPO (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) OLED display technology. If you’re wondering what that means, here’s the simple version: every OLED screen on your iPhone contains millions of tiny transistors that control each pixel. These transistors turn the pixels on and off and adjust their brightness.

There are two main types of transistors: one kind works slowly but uses less power, while the other is faster but drains your battery more quickly. Apple now wants to use more of the power-saving type by adding more oxide material into the transistors. This updated screen technology is being referred to as LTPO3.

With LTPO3, your iPhone’s display could use less power—especially when it refreshes the screen more slowly, like when you’re just reading or looking at a still image. That means longer battery life without giving up the smooth visuals you’ve come to expect.

Tested on Apple Watch. Is it coming to iPhone next?

Before rolling it out to iPhones, Apple tested LTPO3 on the Apple Watch Series 10. These tests have reportedly gone well, allowing Apple to explore bringing the same technology to future iPhones.

However, don’t expect it to arrive too soon. Making LTPO3 screens is more complicated so that Apple will need more time. The company is expected to make a final decision by Q3 2025. If it gives the green light, Apple’s display partners will need around two years to prepare their factories with the right tools and processes. That timeline fits perfectly with a 2027 launch.

Which iPhone model will get LTPO3 first?

While no model has been confirmed yet, rumours suggest the LTPO3 screen may debut on a single iPhone model in 2027. This will likely be the successor to the expected iPhone 17 Air, which will likely feature an ultra-thin design. Because thinner phones often have smaller batteries, any improvements in screen efficiency would be especially helpful.

So, if you want an ultra-slim phone without constantly needing to recharge it, Apple’s new display might be just what you’ve been waiting for.

Keep an eye on developments in 2025 when Apple is due to make its final decision. If things move ahead, you’ll likely be using an iPhone in 2027 with a screen that looks stunning and helps your battery last longer.
