EA has announced that a new free-to-play battle royale mode, titled Battlefield: RedSec, will launch on 28 October. The addition comes just weeks after Battlefield 6 debuted on 10 October, following a series of leaks hinting at the mode’s existence.
A standalone battle royale experience
Battlefield: RedSec will be available to all players at no cost, with no requirement to own the full version of Battlefield 6. The standalone release places it in direct competition with Call of Duty: Warzone, Activision’s popular free-to-play battle royale title.
While EA has not revealed many gameplay details, players can expect the familiar structure typical of the genre. Participants will drop into a large-scale map and battle until only one player or squad remains. A short teaser released by EA hints at four distinct soldier classes, suggesting some level of strategic variation among players.
Eyes up.

The publisher has not yet confirmed how RedSec might connect to the main Battlefield 6 experience, though it could feature crossover elements similar to those seen in Warzone.
Launch coincides with Battlefield 6’s first season
The release of Battlefield: RedSec aligns with the start of Season 1 for Battlefield 6, which also begins on 28 October. This major update will bring new maps, modes, vehicles, weapons, attachments, and cosmetic items to the core game. EA is expected to use this seasonal structure to keep both RedSec and Battlefield 6 content fresh and interconnected.
The launch timing suggests that RedSec may serve as an entry point for new players while offering ongoing rewards or shared progression for those already playing the main title. If the integration mirrors Call of Duty’s approach, the battle royale could become a key pillar in EA’s live-service model for the Battlefield franchise.
A potential boost for EA’s growing franchise
EA’s decision to offer a free battle royale mode could further strengthen the success of Battlefield 6, which sold an impressive seven million copies within just three days of release. By expanding its player base with a no-cost option, EA aims to attract more gamers into the franchise ecosystem while competing with other major live-service shooters.
Battlefield: RedSec will be available for download across multiple gaming platforms starting at 11 a.m. ET on 28 October. If early player reception mirrors the main game’s strong sales, the mode could mark a major milestone in EA’s ongoing push into large-scale, multiplayer experiences.
