Google NotebookLM enhances audio features with tailored overviews and multitasking capabilities

Google NotebookLM adds new features, including tailored audio overviews and background listening, enhancing the user experience and flexibility.

Google has recently introduced exciting new features to its NotebookLM software, significantly enhancing the audio overview functionality. For those unfamiliar, NotebookLM’s Audio Overview tool utilises artificial intelligence (AI) to create audio summaries of various types of content. Initially designed for written material, this tool has now extended its capabilities to include YouTube videos.

New features for tailored audio overviews

So, what’s new with this update? Users can provide specific instructions before generating a “Deep Dive” overview. Google offers examples that allow you to direct the software to focus on a particular topic or adjust the expertise level to match a specific audience. This feature has been likened to “slipping the AI hosts a quick note right before they go on the air,” allowing for a more tailored audio summary experience.

This enhancement enables users to access more precise and relevant audio content, making it easier for them to digest information in a way that suits their needs.

Listening while multitasking

In addition to the improved overview capabilities, NotebookLM has introduced a new background listening feature. As the name suggests, this feature lets you listen to audio overviews while carrying out other tasks within the NotebookLM platform. Google assures users that they can query sources, obtain citations, and explore relevant quotes “without interrupting the audio.” This game-changer is for those who prefer multitasking, making learning and consuming content more flexible and convenient.

The experimental label was removed, and the commercial expansion

It’s also notable that Google has removed the “experimental” label from NotebookLM, indicating that the initial trials have been highly successful. The software has been publicly available since December, and its reception appears to validate its ongoing development.

Furthermore, Google has announced plans for an upcoming expansion aimed primarily at commercial use, called NotebookLM Business. This new version is designed to provide “enhanced features for businesses, universities, and organisations.” If you are part of a business looking to take advantage of these new tools, applications for early access to the pilot programme are currently open.

As Google continues to innovate and refine its NotebookLM software, these new features promise to make information consumption more engaging and tailored to individual needs. With the added ability to listen in the background and the option to customise audio overviews, NotebookLM is set to become an even more valuable resource for users seeking effective ways to process and understand information.
