Hitachi Vantara and BMC join forces to enhance mainframe modernisation

Hitachi Vantara and BMC team up to enhance mainframe modernisation, reducing costs, improving security, and streamlining operations for hybrid cloud environments.

Hitachi Vantara, a subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd., has announced a strategic alliance with BMC Software to optimise and modernise mainframe and open systems environments. By combining Hitachi Vantara’s advanced storage solutions with BMC’s software expertise, the partnership aims to help businesses reduce costs, enhance security, and improve operational efficiency.

As more organisations shift to hybrid cloud models, managing data effectively has become a critical challenge. According to a recent Forrester study, 66% of companies are focused on upgrading their mainframe infrastructure as part of broader modernisation efforts. Additionally, 96% of IT leaders believe these upgrades will provide long-term benefits. The collaboration between Hitachi Vantara and BMC is designed to address key concerns such as data security, operational costs, and seamless integration across on-premises and cloud environments.

Delivering efficiency with a hybrid cloud approach

This partnership introduces a suite of solutions tailored for hybrid cloud environments, bringing together BMC’s AMI mainframe software with Hitachi Vantara’s Virtual Storage Platform One and Hitachi Content Platform (HCP). The goal is to provide businesses with cost-effective, secure, and automated IT operations.

“By establishing this strategic partnership with BMC, we are addressing the evolving demands of hybrid cloud solutions and supporting our clients’ journey toward innovation,” said Greg Bucyk, vice president of strategic partners and alliances at Hitachi Vantara. “This collaboration enables organisations to maximise the value of their data, turning challenges into opportunities for sustainable growth and upgraded operational efficiency.”

The partnership offers several key benefits:

  • Cost reduction: By optimising resources and moving away from costly legacy systems such as virtual tape libraries (VTL) and physical tape hardware, businesses can lower IT expenses.
  • Enhanced security: Features like real-time threat detection and encryption help protect sensitive data from cyber threats.
  • Improved automation: AI-powered automation tools simplify workflows, reducing manual tasks and boosting efficiency.
  • Data monetisation: Businesses can convert and analyse their mainframe data using modern open system tools, extracting valuable insights to drive growth.
  • Simplified IT management: Companies can reduce operational complexity by consolidating IT infrastructure and streamlining vendor management.

Key solutions driving innovation

Several components of BMC’s AMI portfolio play a crucial role in this collaboration:

BMC AMI Cloud

BMC AMI Cloud integrates with HCP to optimise secondary storage costs and improve scalability. By migrating mainframe data to HCP, organisations can convert it into an open systems format, enabling data-driven insights for AI and machine learning applications.

BMC AMI Security

With cyber threats on the rise, BMC AMI Security strengthens Hitachi Vantara’s existing security measures. This solution provides real-time threat detection, a zero-trust approach, and compliance readiness for immutable backups, ensuring that businesses can protect their most valuable data.

BMC AMI Ops and BMC AMI DevX

BMC AMI Ops focuses on automation and efficiency, using AI-driven tools to enhance IT operations. Meanwhile, BMC AMI DevX helps developers streamline software development with modern DevOps practices, enabling faster innovation.

“This partnership helps improve delivery of innovative, practical solutions that help organisations maximise their data,” said John McKenny, senior vice president and general manager of Intelligent Z Optimisation and Transformation at BMC. “Hitachi Vantara and BMC’s alliance combines Hitachi Vantara’s leading data infrastructure with BMC AMI’s software expertise to unlock mainframe potential. In particular, we expect that it will accelerate our clients’ ability to secure and future-proof their mainframe environments in the hybrid cloud reality which they face.”

Industry experts have welcomed the partnership, recognising its potential to accelerate mainframe modernisation efforts. “Integrating mainframe data is essential for success in today’s hybrid cloud environments, yet many organisations face challenges like outdated applications and security concerns,” said Steve White, program vice president for IDC’s worldwide channels and alliances research. “The partnership between Hitachi Vantara and BMC helps address these issues by offering efficient, low-risk solutions for modernisation. This collaboration enhances IT systems and allows organisations to tap into cloud benefits more quickly, supporting innovation and helping businesses maintain a competitive edge in a changing market.”

With enterprises prioritising digital transformation, the partnership between Hitachi Vantara and BMC marks a significant step towards smarter, more secure, and cost-effective IT operations.
