Intel remains on course for next-gen CPUs

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan confirms that next-gen CPUs, including Panther Lake and Nova Lake, remain on track, with Panther Lake arriving in 2025.

Intel has faced several challenges over the past few years, particularly with its top processors. Issues such as Raptor Lake instability and the underwhelming performance of the Core Ultra 9 285K and other Arrow Lake chips have pressured the company. However, Intel’s newly appointed CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, has provided an encouraging update on the company’s upcoming CPUs, including Panther Lake and Nova Lake.

Lip-Bu Tan took over as CEO earlier this year following the departure of Pat Gelsinger. In a letter to stockholders, which Wccftech shared, he acknowledged that Intel still has obstacles to overcome. However, he also expressed optimism about the company’s future. “While there are clear challenges that we need to overcome, there are also significant opportunities to accelerate our turnaround and improve our performance,” he stated.

New CPUs are coming as planned

Lip-Bu Tan reaffirmed Intel’s commitment to its planned roadmap for consumer processors in the letter. Despite earlier reports suggesting delays, Intel appears to be sticking to its original schedule.

“We will further enhance our position in the second half of this year with the launch of Panther Lake, our lead product on Intel 18A, followed by Nova Lake in 2026,” the CEO wrote.

Panther Lake is Intel’s next-generation mobile CPU lineup for those unfamiliar, expected to be included in laptops and other portable devices. These chips will likely be part of the Core Ultra 300 series and are designed to improve efficiency and performance.

On the other hand, Nova Lake refers to Intel’s upcoming desktop and laptop CPU series. If early leaks are accurate, Nova Lake could be a game-changer. Reports suggest that the flagship chip might feature up to 52 cores—an enormous leap compared to current models. However, these early leaks should be taken with some caution until Intel officially unveils the final specifications.

A promising outlook for Intel

This update is a positive development, notably after recent leaks hinted that Panther Lake might not arrive until 2026. Instead, Intel still plans to launch these chips in 2025. The exact timeline remains uncertain, but given that Panther Lake will be used in laptops, product announcements could arrive later in the year, with full availability in early 2026.

New laptop processors are typically showcased at major industry events, such as CES, before becoming widely available in the following months. If Intel follows this pattern, some devices featuring Panther Lake could be announced at CES 2026, with more models hitting the market shortly afterwards.

While Intel has struggled in recent years, this update suggests the company is progressing. If the upcoming chips live up to expectations, they could help Intel regain its competitive edge in the processor market.
