Spotify has begun testing a new audio mixing feature that allows Premium subscribers to customise how tracks flow between each other in playlists. The feature, called Mix, is currently rolling out in beta to what the company describes as “eligible Premium users.”
With Mix, listeners can choose to let the app automatically create smooth transitions between songs, or take control by manually adjusting elements such as volume, equaliser settings, and effect curves. The tool also provides visual waveform and beat data, helping users line up tracks more precisely for a polished result.
The aim is to create seamless blends where one song transitions smoothly into the next, rather than ending abruptly. This gives users the chance to experiment with basic DJ-style techniques without needing more advanced audio editing software, such as Apple Logic Pro, Reaper, or Audacity. For many, it could enhance their listening sessions, while others may use it to provide a more professional-sounding soundtrack at social gatherings.
Collaboration and customisation options
Spotify says the new feature also supports collaboration between Premium subscribers. Users can collaborate to create mixed playlists, combining their song choices with carefully crafted transitions to create a seamless listening experience. This opens up opportunities for shared projects, such as creating themed mixes for events, parties or workouts.
Currently, it remains unclear which Premium accounts have been included in the beta testing stage or when the tool will be made available more widely. The company advises users to ensure their apps are fully updated to access the new functionality. However, not all subscribers can currently view the feature on their accounts.
Premium users who do have access will find the Mix tool in the playlist toolbar. Alongside the automatic transition option, Spotify has included customisation presets like “Fade” and “Rise,” which apply different transition styles in a single click. Once transitions are set, users can save the playlist to keep their changes.
For those who want the option of both mixed and unmixed versions of a playlist, Spotify has made it possible to toggle transitions on or off by pressing the Mix button. This flexibility allows listeners to enjoy a smooth flow of music or revert to the original playlist order at any time.
Availability remains limited during beta
While Mix has the potential to become a popular feature for music lovers, Spotify has yet to confirm when it will move beyond the beta phase or expand to all Premium accounts. The company has not provided specific details about regional availability, though some subscribers in the UK and elsewhere report that they do not yet have access.
By giving users control over track transitions, Spotify is positioning Mix as both an entertainment tool and a simple introduction to music mixing. Whether for casual listening or as a stepping stone towards professional audio software, the feature highlights Spotify’s ongoing efforts to enhance the experience for its paying members.
