Microsoft appoints Matthew Ball to lead Xbox strategy overhaul
Microsoft hires analyst Matthew Ball as Xbox Chief Strategy Officer amid major leadership changes and gaming challenges.
Microsoft has appointed industry analyst and venture capitalist Matthew Ball as Xbox’s new Chief Strategy Officer as the company attempts to strengthen its struggling console business. The move comes amid major change for Microsoft’s gaming division, which has faced hardware challenges, leadership reshuffles, and increased competition from rivals such as Sony, Nintendo, and Valve.

The Game Business first reported Ball’s appointment and later confirmed it through his LinkedIn profile. Microsoft has tasked him with helping shape Xbox’s long-term hardware and business strategy, as the gaming brand faces pressure to regain momentum in the global console market.
The appointment follows a turbulent period for Xbox, as the company has dealt with the effects of global memory shortages and broader corporate restructuring within Microsoft. Competition in the gaming industry has also intensified, particularly as Sony and Nintendo continue to dominate the console space while Valve expands its influence in portable gaming hardware.
Industry analyst moves into senior Xbox role
Ball is widely known in the technology and gaming industries for his analysis of digital economies, virtual worlds and the wider games market. He previously served as chief executive and founder of Epyllion, an advisory and digital production company that also operated a major metaverse-focused investment fund.
Over recent years, Ball has built a reputation through detailed reports examining gaming trends, major publishers and the future of digital entertainment. His annual State of Gaming report has become particularly influential among developers, investors and technology executives.
He is also the author of The Metaverse. This book attracted praise from figures including Epic Games chief executive Tim Sweeney, Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg, model and entrepreneur Karlie Kloss, and former Xbox leader Phil Spencer.
Microsoft appears to be turning to Ball’s strategic and analytical experience as it attempts to redefine Xbox’s position in the gaming market. The company has struggled to keep pace with competitors in hardware sales despite expanding aggressively through acquisitions and subscription services over the past several years.
The appointment signals Microsoft’s intention to place greater focus on long-term planning for Xbox hardware and ecosystem development. Ball is expected to work closely with the company’s gaming leadership as Microsoft explores new approaches to consoles and connected gaming devices.
Leadership changes continue at Microsoft Gaming
Ball joins Xbox during a period of significant leadership transition inside Microsoft Gaming. In February, Microsoft announced a major reshuffle that saw longtime Xbox head Phil Spencer and Xbox president Sarah Bond step down from their roles.
Following their departures, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty was promoted to Chief Content Officer. At the same time, Asha Sharma, previously president of Microsoft’s CoreAI division, was appointed chief executive of Microsoft Gaming.
Since taking over the division, Sharma has introduced a series of changes aimed at reshaping Xbox’s strategy. These included reducing the price of the Game Pass subscription service, removing Microsoft’s Copilot AI assistant from the Xbox ecosystem and teasing a new PC-console hybrid device known as Project Helix.
Ball’s arrival suggests Microsoft is now placing additional emphasis on rebuilding confidence in its console business. Industry observers have questioned Xbox’s long-term hardware strategy in recent years, especially as cloud gaming and portable devices continue to reshape the wider market.
Alongside Ball’s appointment, Microsoft has also brought in another senior executive with expertise in artificial intelligence and infrastructure. Scott Van Vliet, formerly head of Azure OpenAI and AI Core infrastructure at Microsoft, has joined Xbox as Chief Technology Officer.
The move was also first reported by The Game Business before being confirmed on LinkedIn. Van Vliet is expected to oversee Xbox’s technical development strategy as Microsoft continues integrating cloud services and artificial intelligence into its gaming platforms.
Xbox faces pressure after layoffs and acquisitions
The latest executive appointments come after another difficult year for Microsoft’s gaming division. In July 2025, the company conducted a new round of large-scale layoffs that heavily affected Xbox and its associated studios.
The cuts led to multiple project cancellations and the closure of several development teams. The restructuring sparked concern across the games industry, particularly as Microsoft had spent years rapidly expanding its gaming portfolio through expensive acquisitions.
Over the past decade, Microsoft acquired several high-profile studios and publishers, including Double Fine, Compulsion Games and ZeniMax Media. The company’s largest gaming deal came in 2023 when courts approved its US$69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
Despite those investments, Xbox has continued to face challenges translating its expanded catalogue into stronger console sales. Sony’s PlayStation platform remains dominant in many regions, while Nintendo continues to attract players through its hybrid hardware strategy.
At the same time, Valve’s growing influence in handheld PC gaming has created additional competition in a market that Microsoft is now attempting to re-enter through projects such as Project Helix.
The appointments of Ball and Van Vliet suggest Microsoft is preparing for another major strategic shift as it attempts to modernise Xbox and improve its position in the increasingly competitive gaming industry.
