Nvidia’s RTX 5090 is set to feature 32GB of VRAM with high power demands

Nvidia’s RTX 5090 could feature 32GB of VRAM and a hefty 600-watt power requirement, with the RTX 5080 also seeing increased power demands.

Nvidia is preparing to launch its next-generation GeForce RTX 5090 graphics card, which will reportedly feature 32GB of GDDR7 memory. According to reliable hardware leaker Kopite7kimi, the RTX 5090 and its sibling, the RTX 5080, are set to require more power than their predecessors. Nvidia appears to be pushing the limits with these new GPUs to deliver even more performance than previous models.

Increased power requirements for RTX 5090

The Nvidia RTX 5090 is expected to have a 600-watt power requirement, which is a significant jump from the 450-watt needed by the current RTX 4090. It is unclear whether this refers to the total power consumed by the GPU board or just the chip itself, but either way, this increase highlights the card’s significant power demands.

In addition to its power needs, the RTX 5090 is set to come with 32GB of GDDR7 memory, which will run on a 512-bit bus. This will give the card an edge in handling demanding applications, especially those requiring vast memory resources. The new RTX 5090 will also reportedly feature 21,760 CUDA cores, offering more processing power for gaming, content creation, and other high-performance tasks.

RTX 5080 also to see a power increase

The RTX 5080, another member of Nvidia’s upcoming 50-series, is also set to receive a significant upgrade. This card will reportedly require 400 watts of power, compared to the 320 watts consumed by the current RTX 4080. Like the 5090, the 5080 will also feature next-generation GDDR7 memory, though it will come with 16GB of memory and a 256-bit memory bus.

In terms of raw computing power, the RTX 5080 is expected to include 10,752 CUDA cores. This upgrade will enable the card to handle the latest games and applications more efficiently, providing an impressive leap over the RTX 4080.

Reliable leaks point to CES 2025 announcement

Kopite7kimi has a strong track record when it comes to Nvidia leaks, having correctly predicted the specifications and power demands of the RTX 3090 and 3080 cards ahead of their launch. They were also the first to reveal the specifications for Nvidia’s RTX 4070 Ti and the RTX 4080 Super cards.

While the specifications for the RTX 50-series cards have now been leaked, there is no official word on when Nvidia will announce them. However, sources familiar with Nvidia’s plans suggest that we may learn more at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in early 2025. If this is true, tech enthusiasts and gamers will likely get their first official glimpse of these powerful new GPUs at the event.

As Nvidia continues to push the boundaries of graphics card technology, the upcoming RTX 50-series looks set to deliver more power and performance than ever before. However, with increased power requirements, users may also need to consider whether their systems can handle these high-powered GPUs.
