Perplexity launches personal computer AI assistant for Mac users
Perplexity launches Personal Computer, an AI assistant for Mac designed to automate workflows across files, apps, and devices.
Perplexity has introduced a new artificial intelligence assistant designed to work directly on personal computers, marking its latest step into agent-based computing tools. The software, named Personal Computer, is available today for Mac devices and builds on the multi-model orchestration technology first unveiled with the company’s earlier Computer system at the end of February.

The launch places Perplexity among a growing group of technology firms developing AI systems capable of performing tasks across multiple applications. These tools are intended to move beyond simple question-and-answer features, enabling automated workflows that can operate across files, apps and online services.
AI agents designed to handle everyday workflows
A Personal Computer is built as a suite of computer-use agents capable of working across a user’s files, applications, connectors, and web services. The company describes the platform as capable of completing complex, ongoing workflows that would typically require manual interaction across multiple programs.
Perplexity outlined a range of possible uses, beginning with daily productivity tasks. “You can ask Personal Computer to read your to-do list,” the company said. “In fact, you can ask it to DO your to-do list.” According to the firm, users can open the Notes application on their Mac devices and request assistance, after which the system determines the most suitable actions to complete the task.
While performing assignments, the software can interact with local files and applications, such as messaging tools. The system can deploy multiple AI agents simultaneously if required to complete a request. This approach allows different components to focus on distinct parts of a task, potentially improving efficiency when handling more complex activities.
Another example highlighted by Perplexity involves file organisation. The system can scan folders containing poorly labelled or disorganised files and restructure them into a clearer layout. It can also rename files to create consistent and meaningful titles, helping users maintain a more structured digital workspace.
Voice input and remote task management features
In addition to traditional text prompts, Personal Computer supports voice commands, allowing users to instruct the system without typing. This feature is designed to provide a more natural way to interact with the software, particularly for quick requests or when working across multiple tasks.
The assistant can also be controlled remotely from a smartphone. According to Perplexity, users can initiate new tasks or manage ongoing workflows on their mobile devices, even when away from their computers. This capability reflects the broader industry trend of linking desktop and mobile environments to create continuous workflows.
To address concerns around data security, the company stated that files created by Personal Computer are stored within a secure sandbox environment. Actions taken by the system are recorded so users can review what has been done. If necessary, those actions can be reversed, providing an additional level of control.
The company emphasised the importance of transparency when deploying automated systems that handle sensitive information. “A system that acts on your behalf needs to be useful and legible. It should feel like a team you manage, not a rogue employee with keys to your most important data,” the company said.
Availability begins with premium subscribers
Personal Computer for Mac is being rolled out initially to Max subscribers, marking the first stage of its wider availability. Perplexity indicated that access will expand gradually to additional users, with priority given to individuals who previously joined the waitlist for early access.
The staggered rollout suggests the company is taking a controlled approach to deployment, likely allowing it to gather feedback and refine the platform before a broader release. Early access for premium users also reflects a common industry strategy, where advanced features are first introduced to paid subscribers before reaching a wider audience.
The introduction of Personal Computer signals Perplexity’s continued focus on AI-driven productivity tools, particularly those designed to function as autonomous assistants rather than simple chat-based interfaces. As competition intensifies among technology companies developing computer-use agents, the launch highlights how rapidly the sector is moving towards more integrated and automated workflows.
Industry observers expect further expansion of similar tools across different operating systems in the coming months. Perplexity has confirmed plans to extend availability beyond its initial group of users, though it has not provided specific dates for a full rollout.
