Pinterest enhances fashion search with new body type filters

Pinterest expands its "Body Type Filters" to include women's fashion ideas, offering a more inclusive and personalised experience.

A widespread image-sharing and social media platform, Pinterest is taking significant steps towards inclusivity and personalisation in fashion search. They’ve recently expanded their AI-powered “Body Type Filters” to a broader range of users, making finding fashion and wedding inspiration representing diverse body types easier. This move is part of Pinterest’s ongoing commitment to diversity and customised user experiences.

A more inclusive and accurate search experience

The “Body Type Ranges” feature, previously tested and now expanded, allows users to filter search results according to different body types. This initiative is particularly evident in searches for women’s fashion and wedding ideas. When you search in these categories, you’ll be prompted to select from four body type ranges with a visual cue. This will tailor the search results to match how you see yourself better, thus making the experience more inclusive and personalised.

Pinterest’s proprietary AI technology powers this feature. It has analysed over 3.5 billion images on the platform and identifies various body types by considering shape, size, and form. This means that the search results you see are inclusive but more accurate and representative of each individual’s unique body form.

Expanding diversity and personalisation

The introduction of body type ranges is part of Pinterest’s broader effort to enhance user experience through diversity and personalisation. The platform has previously introduced skin tone search filters and hair type discovery options. By continuously adding these features, Pinterest is utilising AI as a novelty and a practical tool to enrich user experience and provide more accurate and personalised content.

Availability and future plans

For now, the body type ranges for women’s fashion and wedding-related content are available in the U.S., with tests conducted in Canada. Pinterest plans to introduce this feature to men’s fashion later in the year and will gradually extend it to new verticals and additional international markets. This ongoing expansion underscores Pinterest’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity across its platform.

By enhancing the search experience with these AI-powered features, Pinterest is taking a significant step towards making fashion and lifestyle inspiration more accessible and representative of a diverse user base. This move increases inclusivity and the accuracy of search results, making Pinterest a more inviting and valuable platform for everyone.
