Resident Evil Requiem adds Leon Must Die Forever mode in free update
Capcom releases Leon Must Die Forever mode for Resident Evil Requiem in a free update with tougher enemies and new features.
Capcom has released a new gameplay mode for Resident Evil Requiem, giving players an additional challenge following the game’s successful launch earlier this year. The update, available from 10 May, introduces a new mode called Leon Must Die Forever, alongside several technical improvements across all platforms.

The mode is free for all players who have completed the main campaign. It expands the experience with tougher enemies, timed combat encounters, and upgraded character abilities centred on the long-running series protagonist, Leon Kennedy.
New mode introduces tougher enemies and timed gameplay
Leon Must Die Forever is designed as a high-intensity survival challenge that pushes players beyond the game’s existing Standard and Insanity difficulty settings. In the mode, players battle through escalating waves of infected enemies while racing against the clock to defeat the final boss before time expires.
According to Capcom, the mode features stronger enemy variants than those found in the main story campaign. Players can choose from five difficulty ranks, with each level increasing the intensity and number of enemies encountered during matches.
The update also adds a system of “enhancer abilities” for Leon, allowing the character to become more powerful as more zombies are defeated. These upgrades are intended to help players survive increasingly chaotic combat scenarios while encouraging aggressive gameplay styles.
Although the mode introduces new mechanics, it takes place in areas already featured in the main campaign. Returning environments are expected to give players a sense of familiarity while facing significantly more dangerous encounters.
Resident Evil Requiem continues its strong commercial run
Capcom released Resident Evil Requiem at the end of February for PC, PlayStation 5, Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S. The title quickly became one of the company’s fastest-selling releases, selling more than 5 million copies in its first week.
The publisher first teased Leon Must Die Forever in March while also announcing plans for a future story expansion. Capcom said at the time that the additional narrative content would require a longer development period, suggesting that players may need to wait several more months before new story chapters are released.
In the meantime, the newly launched mode is expected to provide dedicated players with additional replay value. The focus on wave-based survival combat marks a departure from the main campaign’s slower pacing. It reflects Capcom’s continued interest in expanding Resident Evil beyond traditional story-driven gameplay.
Alongside the new mode, today’s update includes general bug fixes for all versions of the game. PC players have also received added support for the PlayStation DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers, haptic feedback and motion sensor functions.
Fans continue to embrace Leon Kennedy’s return
The latest update highlights the continuing popularity of Leon Kennedy, one of the Resident Evil franchise’s most recognisable characters. Resident Evil Requiem places a strong focus on the veteran agent, with marketing and post-launch content heavily centred on his return.
Community reaction to the announcement has largely reflected players’ enthusiasm for additional Leon-focused gameplay. The new mode’s name itself appears to reference the series’ long-standing “Mercenaries”-style challenge modes while also leaning into the exaggerated action tone associated with some of Leon’s previous appearances.
The release has also sparked renewed interest in early 2000s action films and music connected to the character’s style and era. References to films such as Romeo Must Die and Queen of the Damned have circulated among fans online, alongside renewed appreciation for Aaliyah’s music.
While players continue to wait for Capcom’s upcoming story expansion, Leon Must Die Forever appears intended to keep the game’s momentum going by offering a more arcade-style experience. With Resident Evil Requiem already achieving strong commercial success, the company is likely to continue supporting the title with additional post-launch content in the months ahead.
