Valve has released a new update for the Steam Deck that addresses one of the most frequently requested features from users — the ability to continue downloading games and updates while the device’s screen is turned off.
New display-off downloads mode
Previously, the Steam Deck could not download games or updates while in sleep mode, unlike gaming consoles such as the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, or Nintendo Switch. This limitation has often been a source of frustration for users who want to keep their downloads running without having to power down the device fully.
Good afternoon! We’ve just added a new feature to Steam Deck, allowing it to complete all active downloads in a new display-off low-power mode, before going to sleep. Learn more here: https://t.co/9CvqkAk1bS pic.twitter.com/xcTqGGNaZV

The latest update introduces a new feature called “Display-Off Downloads”, which allows the Steam Deck to keep downloading content while the display is off. When users press the power button during an active download, they will now be prompted to choose whether to continue the download with the screen turned off.
If they confirm, the Steam Deck enters a low-power state that allows downloads to run efficiently in the background. The mode consumes less power than when the screen is on, offering a convenient middle ground between active use and full sleep mode.
Power options and settings
The new download mode is automatically enabled when the Steam Deck is connected to power. Users can also manually enable it when running on battery by adjusting the settings. During the download process, pressing a button or moving the device will display a brief status screen showing the current progress.
Valve designed this feature to make the Steam Deck more flexible for users who prefer to manage their game library efficiently without interrupting gameplay sessions or leaving the system fully awake.
How to access the update
Display-Off Downloads is available through both the Beta and Preview channels of SteamOS. Users who wish to try it can enable either option by pressing the Steam button, navigating to System, and selecting Beta Participation or Preview. Once enrolled, the new download feature will be accessible as part of the update.
The feature can be convenient for players who download large game files or updates that take a considerable amount of time to complete. It brings the Steam Deck closer to matching the convenience offered by other modern gaming consoles in handling background tasks.
Valve continues to refine the Steam Deck experience through frequent updates and user feedback. This latest addition highlights the company’s commitment to improving usability and delivering features that address community requests.
