Veeam launches proactive threat analysis tools to enhance cyber security

Veeam introduces the Recon Scanner, a proactive tool to enhance cyber security by detecting threats before attacks occur, launching in November.

Veeam Software has introduced a new tool, the Veeam Recon Scanner, designed to improve data protection by proactively identifying cyber threats. This cutting-edge technology, announced at the VeeamON Data Resilience Summit, is part of the Veeam Data Platform. Developed by Coveware, a subsidiary of Veeam, the Recon Scanner aims to revolutionise how organisations handle threat detection and data resilience by using the world’s largest database of cyber incidents.

This new tool enables businesses to assess, identify, and address cyber threats before they escalate, providing a more proactive defence against cyber attacks. According to Veeam, the technology leverages years of cyber-extortion response experience to offer a more comprehensive solution for organisations aiming to strengthen their data security.

Recon Scanner addresses growing cyber threats

Cyber attacks, especially ransomware, are becoming more common and increasingly sophisticated, making it harder for businesses to recover once they occur. These attacks often target both active production environments and backup systems, emphasising the need for comprehensive data protection. The Recon Scanner is designed to provide an additional layer of security, detecting adversary tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) before an attack can cause harm.

Dave Russell, Veeam’s Senior Vice President of Strategy, explained the significance of proactive threat assessment. “Protecting your organisation from a cyber-attack requires a coordinated strategy. It starts at the perimeter and requires thorough data backup and protection. However, there’s always the risk of a bad actor slipping through your defences. Recon Scanner provides added peace of mind by identifying adversary tactics, techniques, and procedures before an attack,” he said.

Russell added that by collecting and analysing data, Recon Scanner can spot unusual network connections, suspicious file activities, data exfiltration attempts, and even potential brute-force attacks. This proactive approach helps businesses recognise potential threats before they disrupt operations, boosting overall data resilience.

Advanced threat detection with no added cost

A key feature of the Recon Scanner is its ability to conduct regular scans, flagging suspicious behaviour and helping security teams take immediate action. This sets Veeam apart from other data protection vendors, as it offers the Recon Scanner as part of its Veeam Data Platform Premium at no additional cost to customers.

Coveware, known for handling thousands of ransomware incidents, has integrated its expertise into the Recon Scanner. The tool offers automated scans, real-time alerts, and advanced data analysis, enabling businesses to react swiftly to potential security risks. By doing so, companies can enhance their overall security posture and reduce the likelihood of a successful attack.

Veeam Data Platform v12.2, featuring Recon Scanner, underlines Veeam’s commitment to providing organisations with robust data protection, management, and security solutions. This aligns with Veeam’s adherence to ZeroTrust Data Resilience principles and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure By Design guidelines.

The Veeam Recon Scanner is expected to be available for download in November, offering businesses a powerful new tool to enhance their cyber defences.
