YouTube launches free AI tool to help you create background music

YouTube introduces a free AI tool in the Creator Music section that lets you create copyright-free background music using simple prompts.

YouTube has just launched a helpful new tool that lets you create background music using AI—completely free and without copyright worries. This update is part of YouTube’s ongoing effort to support content creators like you by offering tools that save time and protect your videos from copyright issues.

The new feature is called Music assistant and can be found in YouTube’s Creator Music beta section. If you can access Creator Music, you might soon see this new tab appear. The tool was recently introduced in a video on YouTube’s Creator Insider channel, where host Lauren gave a clear walkthrough of how it works.

Generate music by simply entering a prompt

Using Music assistant is easy. You type in a prompt that describes the kind of music you want. For example, if you’re making a workout video, you could type: “Give me uplifting and motivational music for a workout montage.” The tool will then give you several different instrumental tracks to choose from.

Once you find one you like, you can download it immediately and add it to your video editor. The tool is designed to be user-friendly and fast, helping you find just the right sound without worrying about copyright claims or searching through stock music libraries.

Lauren mentioned that the Music assistant is rolling out gradually, so if you haven’t seen it yet, keep an eye out. In the coming weeks, it will become more widely available to those already using Creator Music.

More AI music tools are emerging

Music assistant is one of many new AI tools for creating music. Other companies are also working on similar technology. For example, Stability AI has created a diffusion model to generate background sounds for different projects. Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, has also developed two tools called AudioCraft and MusicGen that work in a similar way—they let you type a prompt to generate music or sound effects.

These tools are opening up new possibilities for you as a creator. They’re especially useful if you can’t access expensive music production software or professional audio editing skills. Now, all you need is a good idea and a few words to describe your desired vibe.

YouTube is exploring even more AI music features

YouTube has already been experimenting with other AI methods in music creation. One example is a tool for Shorts called the music remixer, which lets you change the style of popular songs so they better match your video. Another exciting feature is Dream Track, which was developed in partnership with Google DeepMind using their Lyria model. With Dream Track, you can hum a tune, and the tool will turn it into a full track that sounds like it was made by well-known artists such as T-Pain.

These tools are part of YouTube’s larger push to make your content creation journey smoother, more creative, and more fun. By combining AI with music, YouTube is giving you new ways to stand out and personalise your videos, no matter your level of experience.

As these features continue to roll out, it’s clear that AI will play a bigger role in how you make and share content on YouTube. Whether creating a vlog, a tutorial, or a short clip, these tools give you more freedom and flexibility to bring your ideas to life.
