AMD dominates CPU sales on Amazon, but Intel is making a comeback

AMD continues to dominate Amazon’s CPU sales, but Intel is returning with budget-friendly older models. Find out more about the latest trends.

The battle between AMD and Intel remains fierce despite Intel holding a larger share of the overall CPU market. In recent years, AMD has become the preferred choice for gamers and PC enthusiasts. This shift is evident in Amazon’s best-selling CPU list, where AMD has often taken the top spots. Just yesterday, AMD dominated the top 15 positions in Amazon’s rankings. However, today, Intel is starting to regain some ground.

AMD’s dominance in CPU sales

According to a report by TechEpiphany on X (formerly Twitter), AMD recently held every single position in Amazon’s top 15 best-selling CPUs. This level of dominance is rare, as Intel was nowhere to be found on the list. The most popular processor then was the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, a high-performance chip particularly favoured by gamers.

This might be a surprise, given that the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is not budget-friendly. Priced at US$480, it is one of the more expensive gaming CPUs. Additionally, it is not always available in stock. However, its strong performance makes it a top choice for gaming enthusiasts, proving that price is not always the deciding factor for high-end hardware.

The Ryzen 5 5500, a six-core processor, followed closely behind, with the Ryzen 5 5600X taking third place. Both of these chips belong to AMD’s older Zen 3 generation, highlighting that AMD’s previous-generation CPUs are still popular among buyers. The presence of Zen 3, Zen 4, and Zen 5 processors in the top 15 suggests that AMD has successfully kept its older hardware relevant and accessible.

Intel fights back with older CPUs

While AMD continues to lead, today’s best-seller rankings tell a slightly different story. Intel has returned to the charts, securing four spots—specifically the second, third, 12th, and 13th positions. However, there’s a catch: three of the four Intel processors on the list are from an older generation, which has seen significant price reductions.

Most of Intel’s best-selling CPUs are from the Alder Lake series, with one from the Raptor Lake lineup—the Core i7-14700K. These older processors have become much more affordable, making them a good value option compared to current-generation models. Interestingly, Intel’s latest CPU generation, Arrow Lake, is nowhere to be found among Amazon’s top 50 best-selling processors. This suggests that many consumers either opt for cheaper, older Intel CPUs or choose AMD instead.

The shift in consumer preference marks a significant change from just a few years ago when Intel was the dominant brand in the market. AMD’s continued success highlights how well it has positioned itself as the go-to choice for budget-conscious shoppers and gaming enthusiasts. While Intel is still fighting, it may need to rethink its pricing strategy to compete more effectively in the gaming and high-performance segment.
